2025 Fantasy Outlook
Detroit's ongoing strategy of having a large number of veteran goaltenders on the roster included Talbot for the second straight year, and he ultimately emerged as the No. 1 option in 2024-25. Still, he had mediocre results with a 21-19-5 record, a 2.93 GAA and a .900 save percentage over 47 games. Talbot's $2.5 million cap hit is reasonable, but entering his age-38 season, it's tough to trust that he'll be able to sustain an acceptable level of play with enough of a workload to help in fantasy. The Red Wings also have Petr Mrazek under contract for 2025-26, and Sebastian Cossa is waiting in the wings for his chance to carve out an NHL job on a full-time basis. Talbot can still be effective, but he's a risky investment on draft day. Read Past Outlooks
Tending twine in Edmonton
Talbot will start on the road versus the Oilers on Thursday, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Talbot is 0-2-2 with 16 goals allowed over his last four games. That skid has allowed John Gibson to claim a larger share of playing time recently. Talbot will have a tough time ending his skid against the Oilers, who have 18 goals over their last three games.

Last season, Talbot played in 54 games for the Kings, going 27-20-6 with a 2.50 GAA and .913 save percentage. He even represented the Kings at the NHL All-Star Game. He inked a two-year deal with the Wings on the second day of free agency in July. On the surface, Talbot is a big upgrade over the Wings netminding mess of 2023-24. Yes, he's 37, and the end of his career is in sight and he has competition with Ville Husso and Alex Lyon, but Talbot still has gas in the tank and should, at a minimum, be able to stabilize the position and deliver on the strong half of a platoon. It's hard to think he'll match last year's ratios - the Wings system is porous in comparison to the Kings' defense-first approach, but Talbot will be a sturdy, above-average fantasy netminder who'll help in deep leagues.

ANALYSIS
Talbot is currently stuck in a three-game losing streak during which he posted a 0-2-1 record to go with a 3.69 GAA. Despite the underwhelming numbers, the veteran netminder appears to have cemented himself as the preferred option between the pipes for the Red Wings, having outplayed John Gibson through the first two months of the season.
