2025 Fantasy Outlook
Byram's offense took a step forward in his first full campaign with the Sabres, as he racked up seven goals and 38 points over 82 games. Staying healthy obviously helped his production, which also included 117 blocked shots, 75 hits and a plus-11 rating. Even after signing a two-year, $12.5 million contract in July, the question remains whether Byram will be a long-term part of the Buffalo blue line. The Sabres already have three defensemen on long-term contracts, though the 24-year-old Byram is also quite talented and could help solidify the team's core should he eventually get a long-term contract. The key now is for Byram to repeat his 2024-25 campaign, or in a best-case scenario, exceed it. What's clear is that he's a top-four defenseman, but he could be a fantasy stud if he can elevate his offense to a 50-point pace. Read Past Outlooks

Avoids arbitration
Byram signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract with the Sabres on Monday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
Byram had been involved in plenty of trade and offer-sheet speculation recently, but the previously restricted free agent is now tied into Buffalo through 2026-27. The No. 4 overall selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft had a career year in 2024-25, generating seven goals, 38 points, 116 blocked shots and a plus-11 rating over 82 games. The 24-year-old blueliner also set a new high-water mark in average ice time (22:42), and his role could continue to grow if he receives top-pairing minutes alongside Rasmus Dahlin in 2025-26.

In a true hockey trade, the Avalanche did right by Byram and traded him to the Sabres in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt at last year's deadline. With a generational defenseman like Cale Makar, Byram was never going to get a chance to shine fully in Colorado. In some ways, his situation didn't change much as he's now sharing a blue line with Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power, but Byram's ice time went up by two minutes per game following the trade. Looking ahead, Byram should get power-play time and roughly 22 minutes per game overall for the Sabres in 2024-25. He averaged 0.5 points per game following the trade, so pencil the 23-year-old in for a 35-40-point season - though fantasy players will need a backup plan in place since his injury history is just as prominent as his breakout potential.

Closing in on extension
Byram and the Sabres are closing in on an extension, Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK reports.
ANALYSIS
Byram has been at the center of trade discussions this offseason, but the two sides seem close to an extension that would keep him in Buffalo. An arbitration hearing was in the future if an extension wasn't reached, but that will no longer be an issue as long as the new deal gets across the finish line. The 24-year-old played in all 82 games last season, recording seven goals and 31 assists, in his first full season with the Sabres.
