Barclay Goodrow

Barclay Goodrow

31-Year-Old Left WingLW
San Jose Sharks
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Goodrow completed his third season with the Rangers, managing just four goals and eight assists in 80 games, by far his worst marks in anything approaching a full year. He was much better in the playoffs, scoring six times and adding two helpers in 16 appearances, but New York wisely realized they couldn't justify his $3.6 million cap hit, so they placed Goodrow on waivers and San Jose claimed him, eating his entire contract in the process. Goodrow played parts of his first six NHL seasons with the Sharks. He has zero fantasy value, but the Sharks have boatloads of cap space and are looking to ice a more competitive team in 2024-25, so the addition does make some sense. Read Past Outlooks

Scores shortie in overtime loss
LWSan Jose Sharks
October 10, 2024
Goodrow scored a shorthanded goal on two shots and added three hits in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
ANALYSIS
Goodrow capitalized on a misplay by the Blues, tallying the Sharks' fourth and final goal at 17:37 of the second period. The 31-year-old was waived by the Rangers in June and scooped up by the Sharks -- the team he began his career with back in 2014-15. His 12 points in 80 regular-season games last year represented his lowest output over the course of a full campaign. He may be more productive in 2024-25, but Goodrow is more likely to chip in hits and PIM than points on a regular basis.

Goodrow has exceeded the 30-point mark in each of his two years with the Rangers. He's a solid forward who can play anywhere from the second line to the fourth line. He does so with ample physicality, having logged 100-plus hits for the fifth year in a row last season. Now 30 years old, there's no reason to expect further growth in Goodrow's offense. He should, however, be able to maintain a 30-point pace for a while longer. He can play at center or on the wing, providing fantasy managers in deeper formats with a tough guy with versatility and enough scoring to round out a roster.
The general consensus was that the Rangers overpaid in terms of both years (six) and salary ($21.85 million) to add Goodrow in free agency in July 2021, and that may have been the case, but he unquestionably made them a better team a season ago. Goodrow finished with a career-high 13 goals and 33 points while playing up and down the lineup. He did miss the better part of a month in the postseason after injuring his foot in Game 1 of New York's first round series with Pittsburgh before returning late in their second-round series against Carolina. There simply isn't enough here to make Goodrow a fantasy option in most formats, but he remains an underrated real-life player.
Goodrow was a key cog on Tampa Bay's vaunted third line and helped the Lightning win a second straight Stanley Cup in 2020-21. He was rewarded for his efforts by the Rangers to the tune of a six-year, $21.85 million contract. That's likely too much money and definitely too much term, but Goodrow is a good, useful player who will help New York in its quest to add "toughness" to its lineup. Offensively, Goodrow has never scored more than eight goals or 26 points in a single season. The 28-year-old kills penalties and is always good for well over 100 hits, but there's little value here in standard fantasy leagues.
Goodrow had a career year of 26 points, 162 hits and 97 PIM in 70 games split between the Sharks and the Lightning in 2019-20. He went quiet in the playoffs with only six points in 25 games, but it's safe to assume Goodrow will bounce back during the 2020-21 regular season. The 27-year-old winger should enjoy third-line usage, where he can toss his body around freely while still racking up 20 or so points. He's not likely to see power-play time given the Lightning's forward depth, but the physicality alone makes Goodrow a viable option in deeper formats.
Goodrow appeared in all 82 games with the Sharks last season, notching seven goals and 17 points while averaging just over 11 minutes of ice time. The 26-year-old winger is a solid bottom-six player and penalty killer for San Jose, but he simply doesn't have enough upside to warrant fantasy consideration. Goodrow can be disregarded in all formats during drafts this year.
Goodrow was decent in limited action with the Sharks last season, picking up seven goals and 14 points in 47 contests while averaging just 10:53 of ice time over that span. The undrafted winger's 14 points last year marked a career high, and there's no reason to believe he'll earn a regular spot in San Jose's lineup and surpass that total this campaign. The 25-year-old is a decent depth option up front for the Sharks, but there's no reason for fantasy owners to have him on their radars heading into drafts this season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Potential trade candidate?
LWNew York Rangers
June 17, 2024
Larry Brooks of The New York Post believes the Rangers should trade Goodrow this offseason.
ANALYSIS
Goodrow still has three more seasons left on his six-year, $21.85 million contract. He also has a modified no-trade clause that includes a 15-team no-trade list. The 31-year-old forward produced four goals and 12 points over 80 regular-season contests in 2023-24 before racking up six tallies and eight points in 16 playoff outings. The Rangers may be able to deal him to a team looking for veteran leadership. If a trade isn't in the cards, Goodrow may become a buyout candidate to free up some cap space and create roster flexibility.
