                2025 Fantasy Outlook

Lafreniere showed promise in 2023-24 when he set career highs with 28 goals and 57 points across 82 regular-season outings. It helped that he spent the season playing primarily alongside elite forward Artemi Panarin after serving mostly on the third line over his first three seasons, but regardless, Lafreniere seemed to be inching towards being a high-end forward in his own right. Unfortunately, the 2024-25 campaign was a regression as he finished with 17 goals and 45 points in 82 appearances. He started well enough, supplying eight goals and 16 points through his first 19 games, but he slipped and never quite found his rhythm again. The Rangers collectively disappointed last season, so Lafreniere isn’t the only one who needs a fresh start. The 2020 first-overall pick still has potential even if he hasn’t lived up to it yet. He’s a gamble, but one that might pay off. Read Past Outlooks

				  Two points in win
Lafreniere had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over the Sabres on Thursday.
				  ANALYSIS
His goal stood as the winner. Lafreniere put the Rangers up 1-0 at 11:43 of the first period when he nabbed a loose puck at the right post and tucked it in behind Alex Lyon. He took a big step back last season (17 goals, 28 assists; 82 regular-season games) after a 28-goal, 57-point breakout in 2023-24. Lafreniere turns 24 next week and is entering Year 1 of a big seven-year, $52.15 million deal (AAV $7.45 million). He has lots to prove.

Lafreniere finally showcased more of the talent that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft during the 2023-24 season. He posted personal bests with 28 goals, 29 assists, 57 points, 217 shots on net and six power-play points. Lafreniere also notched eight goals and 14 points in 16 playoff outings. The 22-year-old forward should continue to build from his partial breakout as his chemistry with Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck develops further in 2024-25. Lafreniere's confidence will be high, and as if that wasn't enough, he will be motivated while playing in the final year of his contract. He will have arbitration rights next summer as a restricted free agent and could cash in if he transitions to being around a point-per-game player.
