ANALYSIS
Nikishin told RG Media, "I have no idea what's going to happen even a month from now. Thinking that far ahead is just asking to be laughed at," so it's unclear if he will actually make the jump to the NHL next year. In the KHL this season, the 23-year-old blueliner has racked up 13 goals and 23 helpers in 49 games, production that would certainly bolster the Canes' blue line ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Nikishin and the Hurricanes are working on a contract ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer reports Monday.

ANALYSIS
General manager Don Waddell told reporters he would like to figure out Nikishin's contract season before the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, which would give the team some guidance on where its blue line stands. The 22-year-old defenseman racked up 17 goals and 39 helpers in 67 KHL games this season, his second straight campaign in which he reached the 55-point threshold.
