Wyatt Johnston

Wyatt Johnston

21-Year-Old CenterC
Dallas Stars
2024 Fantasy Outlook
There was no sophomore slump in 2023-24 for Johnston, as the second-year center put up 32 goals, 33 assists and 216 shots on net over 82 regular-season contests. The 21-year-old also emerged as an all-situations player for the Stars, who had previously been known as a one-line team. Johnston's on a star path already, and he's shown excellent durability by not missing a game over his first two seasons. He could carry his own line, perhaps with fellow top prospect Logan Stankoven, though it's also possible the Stars consider Johnston as an option to fill the spot vacated by Joe Pavelski on the top line. Fantasy managers should expect Johnston's 65-point effort from last season to be his floor moving forward, with a 70-80-point effort being reasonable for 2024-25. Read Past Outlooks

Opens scoring in loss
CDallas Stars
March 8, 2025
Johnston scored a power-play goal and went minus-2 in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Oilers.
ANALYSIS
Johnston, fresh off of signing a five-year, $42 million contract with the Stars on Friday, tallied just 5:48 into this contest. The Oilers took over after that, but it's a positive sign that Johnston and Mikko Rantanen were able to connect on the power play in their first game together after the Stars committed a total of $138 million to the two players on their new contracts. During his nine-game point streak, Johnston has nine goals and six assists, and he's up to 24 tallies, 60 points (21 on the power play), 170 shots on net and a plus-6 rating through 63 outings this season.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
While it didn't end in a Calder Trophy nomination, Johnston's rookie year was a success. Not only did he play in all 82 games, he looked like he belonged with 41 points, 160 shots on net and a plus-6 rating in 2022-23. He faded in the playoffs with just six points in 19 games, but that's not a big concern for his long-term outlook. Just 20 years old, he already looks like a capable second-line center, especially with the guidance of Jamie Benn or Tyler Seguin on his wing to provide stability, depending on the lineup. Johnston shot 15 percent last year, which probably isn't sustainable, but he should be able to increase his shot volume and see a bump in ice time in 2023-24, which could help him exceed 50 points in his second campaign.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Extension likelier in summer
CDallas Stars
March 4, 2025
Johnston is more likely to sign an extension with the Stars over the summer than during the season, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnston is in the last year of his entry-level contract and has yet to miss a game for the Stars in his career. Entering Tuesday's action, he produced 21 goals and 55 points over 60 contests, a slight step up from his 65-point sophomore campaign. Johnston is due a big raise as a core piece of the Stars' lineup in all situations, so he'll likely absorb most of the gains they'd get from the rising cap for 2025-26.
