2023 Fantasy Outlook
Ponomarev's first full season in the AHL was a rousing success. Playing nearly the entire year at age 20, Ponomarev racked up 24 goals and 46 points in 64 games. It was a shocking outcome considering Ponomarev is known more as a responsible two-way center than a scorer. The youngster spent some time in the KHL two seasons ago, which undoubtedly helped prepare him for life in the "A" last season. The No. 53 overall pick in the 2020 draft, Ponomarev has put himself in position for a recall to the Hurricanes at some point this coming season.

Ponomarev's KHL rights were acquired by Avangard Omsk on Wednesday, leading to speculation he will head back to Russia this season, Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Still, the Russian club seems fairly confident he will make the move back home for the upcoming season. While Ponomarev appeared in only seven NHL games for the Pens last year, the youth movement is on in Pittsburgh, so it would be a surprise to see him opt to play elsewhere.
