Holl secured a three-year, $10.2 million contract with Detroit in the summer of 2023, but that's looking like a significant overpayment. He was unable to earn regular minutes with Detroit last season, finishing with five assists, a plus-8 rating, 22 PIM, 39 blocks and 59 hits in 38 contests while averaging 15:05 of ice time. That's in stark contrast to 2022-23 when Holl averaged 20:14 of ice time across 80 regular-season appearances with Toronto. Holl will attempt to rebound this year, but he'll have an uphill battle in his quest to secure a regular role on one of Detroit's three pairings. It's plausible he'll once again spend significant stretches of time as a healthy scratch.

Detroit faces LA on Saturday and Toronto on Sunday. Holl has been a healthy scratch in each of the Red Wings' last two games. Holl has five assists in 27 games this season, his first with Detroit after six seasons with Toronto. Jeff Petry has been a healthy scratch at times this season and could be the odd-man out when Holl reenters the lineup.
