2025 Fantasy Outlook
For 14 straight seasons, Spurgeon has averaged over 20 minutes per game as one of the Wild’s most trusted defensemen, and that's unlikely to change in the 2025-26 season. In the 2024-25 season, the 35-year-old record seven goals, 25 assists and a plus-8 rating in 66 games. The biggest question with Spurgeon has always been how the 5-foot-9 defenseman can hold up throughout a season, and he didn't dispel those concerns by missing 16 games last year. He last played 82 games in the 2018-19 season, and he's missed more than 15 games in three of the last four years. Spurgeon has always benefited from being able to play on the power play, but that’ll be in question this year with Zeev Buium and Brock Faber in the fold. If he’s healthy and gets time on the power play, Spurgeon is capable of a 10-goal, 30-point campaign. Read Past Outlooks

Scores on power play Monday
Spurgeon scored a power-play goal on two shots and blocked three shots in Monday's 4-3 shootout win over the Kings.
ANALYSIS
Spurgeon's first goal and point of the season opened the scoring at 14:04 of the first period. The 35-year-old defenseman has surprisingly occupied a spot on the second power-play unit instead of Brock Faber, though neither of them is challenging Zeev Buium's spot on the first unit. Spurgeon has added four shots on net, three hits, seven blocks and a minus-4 rating through three contests. He's a steady top-four blueliner, and if he retains a power-play spot, he'll have appeal as a depth option in fantasy.

Various injuries, including a long-term hip problem that he is currently recovering from, limited Spurgeon to a meager 16 games last year in which he tallied five assists, including three with the man advantage, and zero goals. While the team and fantasy players will no doubt be eager for a bounce-back campaign, Spurgeon is going to be 34 at the start of the 2024-25 campaign. All signs point to the Edmonton native being ready for Opening Night, but fantasy players may want to take a cautious approach on draft day. If he can stay healthy, Spurgeon should be a near lock for the 30-point threshold and could still be capable of pushing for 40.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Headed to World Championship
Spurgeon will join Team Canada for the 2025 IIHF World Championship, per Michael Russo of The Athletic on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Spurgeon notched seven goals, 32 points and a plus-8 rating over 66 regular-season appearances in 2024-25. The right-shot defenseman added just one goal over six games in Minnesota's first-round series loss to Vegas. This will be Spurgeon's first time competing at Worlds in his career. The Canadians have Noah Dobson, Brandon Montour and Mackenzie Weegar on the right side of the blue line, so it remains to be seen what type of role Spurgeon will fill in the tournament.
