Heading back to Sweden
Lindstrom signed a five-year contract with Djurgardens IF of the SHL on Thursday, per RDS.ca.
ANALYSIS
Lindstrom didn't make any appearances in the NHL in 2024-25, earning 11 points in 42 games with AHL Laval instead. The long-term nature of this contract suggests the 26-year-old defenseman is done pursuing playing opportunities in North America and will ply his trade in his native country for the rest of his career.

Lindstrom spent the entirety of last season in the NHL, but he served as Detroit's No. 7 defender all year and ended up appearing in just 36 games (1 goal, 8 points). It was far from an ideal outcome from a development standpoint for the 24-year-old. The Red Wings shipped the Swede to Montreal in mid-August along with a draft pick in exchange for Jeff Petry. Lindstrom would appear to be a long shot to crack the top six for the Canadiens to start the year, but his path to potential playing time appears far easier than if he remained in Detroit.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Opportunity knocks
Lindstrom could seize the opportunity for NHL playing time since the Red Wings have parted with Patrik Nemeth and Jon Merrill, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports, citing head coach Jeff Blashill.
ANALYSIS
Blashill explicitly mentioned Lindstrom -- Detroit's second-round, 38th overall draft pick -- as one of the players who could earn playing time down the stretch. "Gustav Lindstrom is up with us right now, so there's potential for him to play," he said. "Guys will get opportunities. What they do with that is up to them. Hopefully, they jump through that window of opportunity." Lindstrom registered 11 assists through 20 games for Almtuna IS in his native Sweden this season, and he's tacked on three more helpers through 13 contests for AHL Grand Rapids.
