Back in DC
Beauvillier signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Capitals on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The Capitals missed out on making a big splash in free agency, and it looks like they pivoted to bringing back Beauvillier. In 2024-25, the winger had 25 points over 81 regular-season appearances between the Capitals and the Penguins, which was a rebound from his 17-point effort the year before. The 28-year-old should slot back into a bottom-six role for the Capitals, though he could move up the lineup if younger players struggle.

Considering Beauvillier played for three different teams last season, starting with Vancouver then Chicago and finally Nashville, perhaps the best 2024-25 outcome for the veteran would be to finish the campaign with the same team he starts the season with. In this case, that would be the Penguins, who signed the Quebec native to a one-year, $1.25 million deal this offseason. A fringe playoff team and a one-year contract would certainly seem to be setting Beauvillier up to be traded at the deadline, but that speculation will depend on how productive he can be. With all the trades last year, Beauvillier saw action in a combined 60 regular-season contests in which he garnered a mere five goals and 12 helpers. For now, the winger is expected to fill a third-line role but could get a shot further up the roster if he can rediscover his offensive game.
