Struggles in final round
November 17, 2024
Bryan recorded a three-over 74 in the final round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship to finish tied for 17th place.
ANALYSIS
Bryan started the final round three shots off the lead but a triple bogey on the fourth hole ended any hopes of making a run at the leaders. Things didn't get much better on the back-nine, where he carded two bogeys and a double bogey to fall out of the top-10. Bryan sits right on the bubble for keeping his Tour card at 125th in the FedExCup Fall Standings with one tournament left in the season.

Bryan made six cuts in his 11 starts, including a tie for 12th at the Sanderson. Pretty darn good. He's on major medical extension, with six starts to earn 124.760 points. Bryan is 31 now, which is still young enough to jump-start a PGA Tour career if he can meet that points threshold, which seems possible for him.
Bryan, whose 2018-19 campaign was cut short due to shoulder surgery following the RSM Classic that fall, made his return to the PGA Tour at the 2020 RBC Heritage in June where he made the cut before going on to place T31 or better in three consecutive events from the Travelers Championship through the Wyndham Championship. He averaged $44,719 in official earnings per event throughout his four starts this summer, and he has 17 chances remaining on a Major Medical Extension to accrue 281.699 FedEx Cup points.
Bryan had his card through the 2018-19 season thanks to winning the 2017 RSM Classic, but it is now expired. He has not played since the '18 RSM, shutting it down with a torn labrum in his shoulder. He has not returned to action but should receive a major medical extension. The Tour has not announced the extensions for the 2019-20 season as yet.
Bryan is coming off two of the worst driving seasons imaginable. Not only does he not hit it far, he doesn't hit in straight, ranking 186th and 193rd in strokes gained: off the tee. He's known as a wizard with the wedge and he's a very good putter, so there is hope. Even though Bryan was a rookie two years ago, he's less than two years from turning 30, so he's not exactly young. Still, despite missing almost half his cuts last season with only one top-25, we could envision moderate success on shorter courses in lesser fields.
Bryan used a "battlefield" promotion in 2016 to gain entrance to the PGA Tour and he didn't disappoint in his first full season. Bryan was one of a few golfers that caught the eye of the golfing world late in 2016 and while he wasn't able to keep up with the likes of Jon Rahm, he outpaced Bryson DeChambeau. It's unclear where Bryan's ceiling is at right now, but with a win under his belt already, we have to assume it's pretty high. Bryan makes for an interesting salary cap selection this season because his upside appears to be much higher than his salary from last season, yet he has only one full year under his belt on the PGA Tour.
Bryan earned a battlefield promotion with three Web.com Tour wins, but he struggled in the few PGA Tour starts he had. Based on 2015-16, he'd need to earn a little over $700,000 this season to crack the top-125, and that could go down to the wire.
