2025 Fantasy Outlook
Lawrence really introduced himself to the world with his play at the Open Championship. The South African was in the mix all weekend at Royal Troon and showed that he has a lot of game. Lawrence will now get the chance to play full-time on the PGA Tour after a tremendous season on the DP World Tour in 2024 where he racked up 11 top-12 finishes. Lawrence is a solid player across the board, but in paticular on the greens. Last season he ranked second in SG: Putting and ninth in putts per GIR. Apart from his solo fourth at the Open, Lawrence played in five PGA Tour events but only made the cut in one of them, so there is a bit of reason for concern on how his game will translate. Lawrence carded a five-over 75 in his final round of the U.S. Open to fall into a tie for 12th in his first ever U.S. Open.
ANALYSIS
Lawrence came into his first U.S. Open struggling for the season as he had missed the cut in seven of his last ten tournaments. So when Lawrence opened as one of ten players to begin the U.S. Open under par in their first round after shooting a three-under 67, Lawrence was the surprise of the tournament. While he wasn't able to back up his impressive first round, he still competed hard shooting a second round 74 and a third round even par 70, to remain toward the top of the leaderboard and just four shots off the lead heading into Sunday. Sunday came as expected for Lawrence as he opened going bogey, double-bogey in his first two holes. While he steadied the ship, the rough start attributed to Lawrence shooting a final round 75 and finishing in a tie for 12th for the tournament. Overall, Lawrence exceed expectations and compared to the rest of the field, he on average gained strokes in every strokes-gained categories for the week, finishing with gaining over two strokes on the field in SG: Total. He will look to build on this going forward throughout the rest of the season.
