The 2020 winner of the Wyndham is exempt through 2022-23. He made 11 cuts and missed 11 last season. His best showing was T20 at the opposite-field Barbasol. For someone who is so bad for so much of the time, Herman has three career wins (2016 Houston, 2019 Barbasol). So his puncher's chance is better than most.
Herman parlayed an outlier of a win at the Wyndham to win the vast bulk of his money. He's been on the PGA Tour for nearly a decade and he has three wins on his resume, but he's also been incredibly inconsistent. It's not likely he'll find another win this season.
Herman had one good week in the 2018-19 season. He won the Barbasol Championship to give himself a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. Other than that, Herman made four cuts in 20 starts with no finishes better than a T43. He should be avoided in all fantasy formats next season.
Herman struggled in his first three seasons on the PGA Tour, but he turned it around in 2015 when he finished safely inside the top-125. He backed up that season with an even better performance during the 2015-16 season, when he topped the $2 million barrier for the first time. Last season then was a barometer on which way Herman would go with his career. Take another step up the rankings and Herman would become a recognizable name, a step back and his fate would be unclear. The latter is where Herman is entering this season as it's hard to tell which way he goes from here. He certainly has the upside to post a big enough number to warrant a salary cap selection, but the safe play is to pass.
Herman turned pro in 2000 and for much of the past two decades, professional golf has been a struggle. That struggle turned into triumph last season though as he picked-up his first PGA Tour victory at the Shell Houston Open. To lend some perspective, Herman's win nearly doubled his career earnings on the PGA Tour. While it was a great feat for Herman, it doesn't bode well that it took 16 years to get there. With that in mind, Herman is highly-overpriced in salary cap leagues this season. In draft leagues he should go late, near the eighth or ninth round.
Herman had some good 2013 PGA Tour numbers – fifth in the total driving and fifth in ball striking – that boded well for some decent play in 2013-14. But he slumped badly in both and, combined with his traditionally poor putting, wound up back in the Web.com Tour finals. He used a pair of fourth-place showing to return to the PGA Tour for a third straight year and fourth in five. He didn’t so much as have a top 25 last season, and finishing inside the 125 seems a stretch at this point.
Herman fared much better in 2010 when he tore up the Web.com Tour. He is one of a few graduates who should make the transition to the PGA Tour easily as he played a full season there just a couple years ago.
Herman has improved his scoring average in each of his three seasons on the Nationwide Tour, and for the first time, he cracked the top-25 on the money list. While Herman is improving each year, his progress is a little slow, and he needs to really step up his game this season to crack the top 125.
