Trey Sermon

25-Year-Old Running BackRB
Indianapolis Colts
2024 Fantasy Outlook
A third-round pick of the 49ers in 2021 out of Ohio State, Sermon never earned the trust of Kyle Shanahan and was let go after his rookie season. His 2022 campaign consisted of just two games with the Eagles, and he saw significant action in only one game for the Colts last season. Sermon looks like the part of a lead back and has a three-down skill set, but he seems to lack the football IQ to make an impact in the NFL despite his physical talents. He'll compete with Evan Hull for backup duties in 2024 behind Jonathan Taylor. Read Past Outlooks

Back to limited role on offense
RBIndianapolis Colts
October 28, 2024
Sermon had one reception for 14 yards and no carries in Sunday's loss at Houston.
ANALYSIS
With the return of Jonathan Taylor from an ankle injury, Sermon moved to a limited backup role. Sermon played on just 10 of the offense's 64 snaps while Taylor played on 52 snaps and Tyler Goodson played on two snaps. Sermon likely will have a minimal role while Taylor is healthy.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
It was no real shock last season when a rookie stole the spotlight in the San Francisco backfield. What might have been a surprise was which rookie running back did the deed. Taken in the third round out of Ohio State, Sermon was overshadowed by sixth-round pick Elijah Mitchell, who impressed his coaches more in the preseason and then took over lead-back duties when Raheem Mostert got injured. Sermon did show what he could do in Week 4 when both Mostert and Mitchell were sidelined, cranking out 89 rushing yards on 19 carries, but he then saw only 12 touches the rest of the year, missing a game as a healthy scratch and then because of an ankle injury. Sermon was waived by the 49ers in August, however, and quickly claimed by Philadelphia, where he'll provide his new team with backfield depth behind Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott.
A third-round pick, Sermon could not have found a better landing spot than San Francisco. A one-year starter at Ohio State after transferring from Oklahoma, he never posted 1,000 yards in college, but Sermon has the size, power and explosiveness to be an effective weapon in the NFL. Questions were raised about his vision and elusiveness, and his upright running style makes it tough for him to stay on his feet after contact and could lead to injuries down the road, but in a Kyle Shanahan scheme built around getting players the ball in open space, some of those issues fade in importance. Sermon is no match for teammate Raheem Mostert in the speed department, but the rookie could still earn carries off the bench early in the season, especially after Jeff Wilson had knee surgery in May. If he does eventually end up in a starting role, Sermon has the skills (and team context) to make an impact.

Another start on tap Sunday
RBIndianapolis Colts
October 11, 2024
Sermon is expected to serve as the Colts' No. 1 back for the second straight game Sunday due to Jonathan Taylor's confirmed absence as a result of an ankle injury, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon filled in for Taylor during a Week 5 loss to the Jaguars during which game script worked against the ground attack to an extent, and he finished with 38 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries while adding a 6-25 line through the air. The fourth-year pro is set to reprise the role against the Titans on Sunday, and he'll be facing a Tennessee defense that's given up 144.5 rushing yards per game over its first two home contests.
