The Colts kept Gay busy after signing him to a big contract during the 2023 offseason, but he didn't exactly reward them, missing half of his attempts from 50-plus yards (11-of-22) en route to an 82.1 field-goal percentage overall. He missed just one PAT and three field-goal attempts inside of 50 yards, but that ultimately wasn't enough to justify his salary, so the Colts released him in April. The Commanders then signed Gay to a one-year, $4.25 million contract and released fellow kicker Zane Gonzalez, setting up Gay in what should be a high-volume role for a team that scored the fifth most points in the league last season. The 49ers reverted Gay to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
With Eddy Pineiro missing the past two weeks due to a hamstring injury, Gay has stepped in and gone 4-for-4 on field goals as well as 4-for-4 on PATs. San Francisco is on bye Week 14 and Pineiro is trending toward active status when the team returns to action Week 15, so Gay's tenure as the club's kicker may have come to an end.

Gay cashed in big after his impressive showings for the Rams in 2021 (94.1 FG percentage) and 2022 (93.3 percent), signing a four-year contract with the Colts last spring that made him the second-highest-paid kicker in terms of average annual value. He ended up tying for second among kickers in fantasy points thanks to his 41 field-goal attempts (second most), but he also had the second most FG misses (eight). To be fair, five of those misses came from 50-plus yards, and Gay also had eight makes in that range, making him more of a slight disappointment than a disaster. The contract should give him job security for 2024, and there's a chance for the Colts offense to take a big step forward with second-year QB Anthony Richardson at the helm.
