Jeff Wilson

29-Year-Old Running BackRB
Miami Dolphins
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The 28-year-old battled injuries again in 2023, appearing in only 10 games, but he was effective with limited touches and averaged 4.6 yards per carry. Wilson remains the closest thing to a power back in the Dolphins' RB room as Raheem Mostert, De'Von Achane and rookie Jaylen Wright are all speed merchants. That didn't translate into goal-line usage last season, and Wilson saw only one carry inside the five-yard line while failing to find the end zone at all. If he happens to be healthy when other Miami backs aren't though, he can he useful. Read Past Outlooks

Coach's Decision
December 15, 2024
Wilson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
After he was inactive for a stretch of seven straight games from Weeks 5 through 12, Wilson had suited up for both of Miami's last two contests. He played just five snaps on offense between those two games, carrying one time for four yards and gaining seven yards on his lone reception. With Raheem Mostert (hip) back in action this Sunday after a one-game absence, Wilson will return to the inactive list while the Dolphins opt to have only three running backs dress for the Week 15 game.

Wilson played for Mike McDaniel four years in San Francisco and became one of his most trusted players -- so much so that the coach convinced the front office to trade a fifth-round pick after Week 8 last year to acquire the veteran back. He started well for Miami, totaling 267 yards in his first three games and averaging 5.4 yards per carry, but a hip injury slowed him in the middle of the season and Raheem Mostert took over more work. The Dolphins re-signed Wilson to a two-year, $5.99 million deal with his 2023 pay almost fully guaranteed, suggesting McDaniel has a substantial role in mind again. Although lacking the speed of Raheem Mostert and third-round pick De'Von Achane, the 27-year-old Wilson holds a weight advantage -- about eight pounds more than Mostert and 25 more than the rookie. That doesn't make the 6-foot Wilson much of a power back at just 213 pounds, but he might be the closest thing the Dolphins have to one this season. He'll first need to complete his recovery from abdomen and finger injuries, with a stint on injured reserve ruling him out for the first four games of the season.
Wilson began last season on the PUP list due to a foot injury, so he missed a chance to take over for injured starter Raheem Mostert early in the campaign. That opportunity was seized by rookie Elijah Mitchell - who excelled and is lined up to be the 49ers' No. 1 running back in 2022 - but Wilson still earned four starts for an absent Mitchell between Weeks 11 and 16. The four-year pro provides a well-balanced set of skills that can be interchanged in any role. From a fantasy perspective, it likely will take injuries or a change of scenery for Wilson to pop back on the radar.
Kyle Shanahan's ability to make a silky smooth fantasy asset out of a sow's ear of a prospect has never been more apparent than with Wilson. An undrafted rookie out of North Texas in 2018, Wilson failed to impress in athletic testing, running a 4.57 40-yard dash at 208 pounds at his pro day, with similarly middling results in other drills. However, he signed with the 49ers and showed enough to stick, eventually earning Shanahan's trust as a short-yardage option. Over the last two seasons, Wilson has scored eight of his 11 touchdowns from inside the 5-yard line, though he's also seen more and more work in other situations as the rest of the 49ers backfield has dealt with various injuries. The result was something of a mini-breakout in 2020, highlighted by a 183-yard performance against the Cardinals in Week 16. Wilson's best trait as a runner might be sheer stubbornness. His rate of broken tackles per carry, and yards after contact per carry, were comparable to the likes of Chris Carson and Josh Jacobs. The 49ers saw enough to give Wilson to a guaranteed one-year, $2.05 million contract, but he then suffered a meniscus tear in May, requiring surgery with an estimated recovery timeline of 4-6 months. Wilson isn't expected to be ready for Week 1, but he could make an impact later in the year if the 49ers aren't getting enough from their other running backs -- a group that includes Raheem Mostert, Wayne Gallman and rookie third-round pick Trey Sermon.
Wilson's 2019 story had a similar opening to that of his rookie 2018 season when he began the year on the 49ers' practice squad before being promoted to replace an injured player. The 24-year-old received fewer touches this go-around - 30 touches over 10 contests - but he emerged as a trusted goal-line back, hitting pay dirt four times from in close in his first two games following activation. The North Texas product saw his role reduced drastically once Tevin Coleman returned and Raheem Mostert exploded onto the scene. With both backs still under contract and Jerick McKinnon at the top of the depth chart, Wilson's role in San Francisco is uncertain now that he can no longer be stashed on the practice squad.
The 49ers backfield sustained its fair share of injuries last season, which allowed an undrafted rookie off the practice squad to earn some reps as a starter. Wilson proved to be capable in the six games (three starts) for which he was active, rushing for 266 yards (4.0 YPC) and gaining 92 receiving yards on 12 receptions. The 23-year-old will find it hard to crack the active roster in 2019, as the addition of Tevin Coleman, return of Jerick McKinnon and presence of Matt Breida and special-teams ace Raheem Mostert could leave Wilson on the outside looking in.

Wilson's a logical candidate to be traded by the Nov. 5 trade deadline, per Alain Poupart of SI.com.
ANALYSIS
Wilson is fourth on Miami's running back depth chart with all three of De'Von Achane, Raheem Mostert and Jaylen Wright healthy. If another team looking for running back depth makes an offer for Wilson, the 2-6 Dolphins would have little reason to say no.
