2025 Fantasy Outlook
The 49ers took Moody with the 99th overall pick in the 2023 Draft and have stuck with him so far through two rocky seasons. His rookie year was statistically solid and included a game-tying, 53-yard field goal late in the Super Bowl, but there were also prominent misses late in games and then throughout the playoffs. Moody's second season went even worse, featuring 10 missed field goals (on 34 tries) even though he missed four weeks with an ankle injury. The 49ers signed Greg Joseph in May to compete for the placekicking job, but they then released him in early August, likely setting up Moody for one final chance to live up to his draft capital. Moody did not attempt a field goal while converting his lone extra-point attempt in Saturday's 30-9 preseason loss to Denver.
ANALYSIS
Moody kicked off Saturday's preseason campaign for San Francisco after winning the position battle following Greg Joseph's release earlier this week. The 25-year-old Moody struggled to the tune of a 71 FG% on 34 attempts in 2024, but he did suffer a mid-season injury that may have affected his play. Now fully healthy and with his job not currently in jeopardy, Moody will attempt to get his 2025 campaign off on the right foot.

2023
Drafted 99th overall last year and joining one of the Super Bowl favorites, Moody was greeted by far more pressure than a typical rookie kicker. He ended up leading the league in PATs (60 of 61) and ranking 27th in field goals made (21 of 25), with his solid work in real life overshadowed in the fantasy realm by San Francisco's league-leading red-zone TD rate (68.0 percent). Moody finished 18th at the position in fantasy scoring and then missed three kicks in three playoff games, but he also hit a go-ahead, 53-yard FG with under two minutes remaining in the Super Bowl. It was enough to ensure he'll be back as the kicker for one of the league's best teams, and his volume should trend at least a little more toward FGs and away from PATs this year, though the Niners' red-zone efficiency under coach Kyle Shanahan is nothing new.
The Niners spent a compensatory third-round pick on Moody, who converted all 148 of his PATs at Michigan and went 69-for-84 on field goals (82.1 percent), notably hitting 52 of 60 (86.7 percent) his final two seasons. He was the first kicker drafted this spring and figures to take over a role in which Robbie Gould tied for seventh among kickers in fantasy scoring last year, though he will have to beat out trade-acquisition Zane Gonzalez. Gould averaged three or more PATs per game three of the last four seasons, but he actually put up better fantasy numbers in 2017-18 when the Niners struggled in the red zone. Moody has a stronger leg, of course, so it's possible he isn't as reliant on PATs as Gould was the last few years.

Kicking battle his to lose
KSan Francisco 49ers
June 15, 2025
Matt Barrows of The Athletic describes the 49ers' kicking competition as "Moody's to lose, for sure."
ANALYSIS
Moody looks to be in the driver's seat, but he will have to stay sharp to hold off a challenge from Greg Joseph in training camp. Barrows also believes San Francisco "will have Joseph on speed dial during the regular season," so Moody may not be afforded the opportunity to work his way out of a rut like the one he went through during the 2024 campaign, when Moody missed 10 of his 34 field-goal attempts. San Francisco's third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft was much more accurate in his rookie campaign, making 21 of 25 field-goal attempts in the regular season while missing only once on a league-high 61 PAT tries.
