Sees first target in win
TECleveland Browns
October 28, 2024
Swaim caught his only target for seven yards in Sunday's 29-24 win over Baltimore in Week 8.
ANALYSIS
The target was Swaim's first in six games with the Browns. The 31-year-old has worked his way from the practice squad onto the active roster and out-snapped Jordan Akins for a fourth consecutive game. Neither backup can expect much of a workload while David Njoku is healthy.

Swaim was in a three-way committee at tight end in Tennessee during the 2021 season. He still managed to rack up a career-best 31 receptions, though he failed to top 50 yards in any game. The names have changed on the depth chart, but Swaim is likely to fill a similar role in 2022 while work-ing alongside Austin Hooper and rookie Chigoziem Okonkwo. Don't expect a step forward in Swaim's production, but he may prove a useful streaming option at various points in the season.
Swaim is entering his seventh season in the NFL, an impressive feat considering that he was a seventh-round pick in 2015. On the other hand, his career-high for receptions is 26, which occurred in 2018 and that was the lone time he's topped 20 catches. His role has largely been as a blocker, something that isn't likely to change given that Anthony Firkser - primarily a receiving tight end -- is ahead of him on the Titans' depth chart.
The 2018 season lasted only nine games for Swaim, as he was forced to undergo surgery for a broken wrist in November, and finished the year catching 26-of-32 targets for 242 yards and one touchdown. The numbers were modest, but they still out-produced the Jaguars' leader at tight end, as the position provided little in the passing game all season. Swaim figures to have the upper hand on the starting role but will still have to compete with rookie third-round pick Josh Oliver. Swaim is hardly a sure thing, as 2018 was the first time he eclipsed 100 receiving yards in a season. New quarterback Nick Foles utilized tight ends heavily in Philadelphia, and while Swaim doesn't have the profile of Zach Ertz or Dallas Goedert, he shouldn't have any issues providing reasonable production should he manage to hold off his rookie competition. Swaim is poised to begin the season in the starting role after Oliver sustained a hamstring injury early in training camp, though he'll likely still have to fend off the rookie at some point.
Jason Witten's departure leaves the Cowboys woefully short of experience at tight end, and Swaim - with only nine catches in 28 games over three seasons - is the closest thing the team has to a grizzled veteran at the position. Swaim's injury history and lack of standout tools would seem to make him a liability as a starter, but he's got a well-rounded skill set and can fit as a backup who won't tip the offense's hand whether a play is run or pass. The Cowboys may not have the luxury of using Swaim in that role if none of their other TE options impress in training camp, however.
A torn pectoral muscle ended Swaim's season after nine games last year, and offseason foot surgery could limit his snaps in the preseason, but when healthy he's a solid if unremarkable backup to Jason Witten. With athletic specimen Rico Gathers making a push for a roster spot, though, Swaim may find himself squeezed off the roster if he isn't able to fully show what he can do in training camp.
Swaim barely got on the field last year as a rookie, playing in only four games and catching his only target for zero yards. If Gavin Escobar's recovery from a torn Achilles is slower than expected it could push Swaim up the depth chart to begin the season, but he'll need to show more aptitude as a receiver to draw Tony Romo's eye. Even if Swaim does improve, he'll still be stuck behind Jason Witten, so snaps and targets will be tough to come by.
Dallas traded back into the seventh round of this year's draft to nab Swain, an athletic player who was primarily used as a blocking tight end in college after Texas switched offenses early in his career. As a senior at Texas, the 6-foot-4, 250 pound tight end hauled in just 10 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys think he can be something more down the road, but if he wins a roster spot this season, expect him to primarily contribute on special teams.

Aaron Schatz of ESPN.com believes the Jets should sign Swaim as a final move before the start of training camp in late July.
ANALYSIS
Swaim signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals last offseason after spending the previous three seasons with the Titans. He ended 2023 on the IL with a calf injury, finishing with 10 catches on 11 targets for 94 yards and one touchdown over 14 games. While the Jets have Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert as the top tight ends on the roster, Schatz notes that Swaim brings elite run-blocking ability that would open space for Breece Hall.
