Grupe won the Saints' kicker job as an undrafted rookie in 2023 and hasn't missed a game since, making 83.8 percent of field-goal attempts and 97.3 percent of PATS. He's been about average from long range -- going 12 of 17 from 50-plus yards and 15 of 18 from 40-plus -- and about average at converting the shorter stuff. Grupe knocked down a career-best 87.1 percent of his field-goal tries in 2024, but his accuracy had cratered during his third NFL season. After missing attempts from 38 and 47 yards in the Saints' Week 12 loss to the Falcons, Grupe's conversion rate for the season dropped to 69.2 percent, placing him last among all NFL kickers with at least 20 attempts. The Saints have signed Cade York to their practice squad following a tryout, and he'll presumably be elevated or signed to the 53-man roster to step in as the team's new kicker beginning with Sunday's game in Miami.

Grupe is small even by kicker standards, listed at 5-7, 156. That didn't stop him from catching on with the Saints as an undrafted rookie last year, nor did it stop him from making six of nine kicks from 50-plus yards. He also made each of his 40 PATs, though shorter field goals were a problem area with Grupe missing two of 12 tries inside 30 yards. He tied for eighth among kickers in fantasy scoring and figures to remain the Saints' starter in 2024, with potential benefits including home games played in a dome and a head coach (Dennis Allen) who routinely ranks among the least aggressive in going for it on fourth down.

Grupe has been the presumed favorite to remain the Saints' kicker in 2024 after making 30 of 37 field-goal attempts as a rookie in 2023, but Smyth is apparently hanging around in the competition. Grupe has connected on all three of his field-goal attempts in preseason, but Smyth kicked the game-winning field goal against the Cardinals in the preseason opener and turned heads by hitting a 65-yard field goal in practice Tuesday.
