2022
Buchner made his way to Alabama following Notre Dame’s spring game, after it was obvious that Sam Hartman would be the starting quarterback for the Irish this season. Buchner was the starter for the Irish in the season opener in 2022 before sustaining a shoulder injury after just two starts. Buchner struggled passing the ball during his brief time under center, though, completing less than 56-percent of his passes in those two contests, failing to throw a touchdown while tossing two interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback did score twice on the ground, though. Buchner was able to return for the Gator Bowl against South Carolina, where he performed admirably in a 45-38 win. Buchner completed 18-of-33 passes for three touchdowns and three interceptions, while also rushing 12 times for 61 yards and two additional scores. Still, with Hartman transferring from Wake Forest after an incredible season for the Demon Deacons, the writing was on the wall for Buchner. Instead, he will now battle with Jalen Milroe for the starting job at Alabama, though the latter would appear to have the inside track at the role to begin the 2023 campaign.
