Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Buchner made his way to Alabama following Notre Dame’s spring game, after it was obvious that Sam Hartman would be the starting quarterback for the Irish this season. Buchner was the starter for the Irish in the season opener in 2022 before sustaining a shoulder injury after just two starts. Buchner struggled passing the ball during his brief time under center, though, completing less than 56-percent of his passes in those two contests, failing to throw a touchdown while tossing two interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback did score twice on the ground, though. Buchner was able to return for the Gator Bowl against South Carolina, where he performed admirably in a 45-38 win. Buchner completed 18-of-33 passes for three touchdowns and three interceptions, while also rushing 12 times for 61 yards and two additional scores. Still, with Hartman transferring from Wake Forest after an incredible season for the Demon Deacons, the writing was on the wall for Buchner. Instead, he will now battle with Jalen Milroe for the starting job at Alabama, though the latter would appear to have the inside track at the role to begin the 2023 campaign.
Buchner did not get a ton of action his freshman year as the backup for Jack Coan, but he has the potential to be an upgradet for the Fighting Irish next season. In 2021, the freshman threw for 298 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. These numbers were impressive for a backup quarterback, but what was even better was that he rushed for 336 yards on 46 attempts and added on another three touchdowns. It appears as though Notre Dame may have a dual threat on its hands, as they know that their quarterback can run well, and he was also accurate in the little bit of passing he did as well. While Buchner does still have to compete with Drew Pyne for the starting role, if Buchner plays well in spring practice and heals the rolled ankle he has been dealing with, he has a good chance to solidify his position as QB1.
