Will undergo season-ending surgery
Mathis will undergo season-ending surgery due to a knee injury, Joseph Duarte of The Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
According to an earlier report also publicized by Duarte, Mathis suffered the knee injury during a non-contact drill Wednesday. The injury is a torn ACL, which explains his surgery being season-ending. In terms of Houston's running game for 2024, Parker Jenkins and Stacy Sneed are expected to pick up the slack with Mathis out. Further down UH's depth chart at RB are Re'Shaun Sanford and Sherman Smith (foot).

2022 Fantasy Outlook
West Virginia boasts one of the best offensive lines in the conference which should help propel Mathis to a career year at West Virginia. Behind one of the Mountaineers' top running backs in school history in Leddie Brown, Mathis had 72 carries for 312 yards to go along with seven catches for 29 yards during the 2021 season. In a Week 13 matchup at Kansas, Mathis showed what he can do with a significant role with 118 yards on 22 carries. He'll look to have many more of those 100-yard rushing performances in a feature role and will also receive significant help from a huge upgrade in West Virginia's passing game. JT Daniels comes over from Georgia to reunite with his former offensive coordinator Graham Harrell.
