Shepard might be the nation's top receiver if not for injury and quarterback considerations. He suffered a groin injury Nov. 1 that lingered the rest of last season, all but ending it, and, at press time, Oklahoma was entertaining a three-man QB competition among a cast of discouraging candidates. Shepard scorched defenses before the injury, catching 49 passes for 911 yards and five touchdowns in just seven games. And the Sooners offense should be much more pass-happy this year as new coordinator Lincoln Riley attempts to install an East Carolina-style offense. While poor quarterback play might limit Shepard's ceiling, increased pass attempts should prevent a decline in his numbers.
Shepard is set to take over as the next big-name Oklahoma wideout, as the Sooners lost three of their top four receivers from last year to graduation. Shepard caught 51 passes for 603 yards and seven touchdowns last year despite the now-graduated trio of Jalen Saunders, Lacoltan Bester and Jaz Reynolds combining for 102 catches. Shepard (5-10, 194) showed a promising touchdown percentage last year by scoring once every 7.3 catches. And with Trevor Knight at quarterback, Oklahoma could have its best passing game in years.
Shepard certainly has upside, having racked up over 600 yards as the team’s fourth option through the air last season, and should be the number two guy behind fellow receiver Jalen Saunders in 2013. Although number two WR Justin Brown caught 73 passes last season, Shepard won’t necessarily jump to that level of production, since new quarterback Blake Bell is more adept at running than he is throwing the ball.
