Bound for NFL
QBNo Current School
January 1, 2022
Howell announced Saturday that he will forgo his remaining eligibility at North Carolina to enter the 2022 NFL Draft, Rivals.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As anticipated, Howell will be moving on after an exceptional three-year career with the Tar Heels, during which he posted a 92:23 TD:INT while adding 17 scores on the ground. In a draft class that lacks high-end talent at quarterback, Howell could find himself in the first-round conversation if he tests well and impresses NFL front offices and coaching staffs during the pre-draft process. As for the Tar Heels, head coach Mack Brown will likely hold an open competition at quarterback for 2022, with Jacolby Criswell expected to enter the spring as the No. 1 option on the depth chart. Expect North Carolina to remain active in the transfer portal to add another experienced option at the position.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Howell is a projected first-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft, but how should you approach him in fantasy this year? His talent is known, but it will be put to the test in 2021. Gone are 49 percent of the receiving yards and 44 percent of the targets in Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome. And that’s while defenses were also focusing on stopping Javonte Williams and Michael Carter out of the backfield. All four are gone, so it will be on Howell to make the most of an inexperienced skill position group. Howell faces more uncertainty than some of the other quarterbacks going in his range in drafts.
Howell is looking to build on an impressive freshman season that saw him throw for 3,641 yards and 38 touchdowns. How can he improve those totals as a sophomore? By being more efficient, as he completed "just" 61.4 percent of his throws, ranking a moderate 54th nationally. Howell will have a full complement of weapons to target, as the Heels return their top two leading rushers and top five receivers, led by a dynamic duo of Dazz Newsome and Dyami Brown, both of whom topped 1,000 yards and scored at least 10 times in 2019. Beau Corrales' 6-foot-4 frame gives Howell a bigger receiver to target inside the 20, and another year in the system with returning weapons suggests we haven't seen the best from Howell yet. He tossed multiple scores in every game last season, making him a consistent weekly option who could flirt or eclipse 40 TDs in 2020.
