Riley Leonard

Riley Leonard

Notre Dame Fighting Irish
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Leonard brought a dynamic style of play to Duke, which peaked in 2022, where he logged 3,666 scrimmage yards and 33 touchdowns, 13 of which were on the ground. Ankle and toe injuries riddled his 2023 season and problems with his ankle have bled into Notre Dame's offseason, which raises some questions as to whether he'll be able to replicate a season as a dual-threat quarterback. The 6-foot-4 quarterback brings promising athleticism, which will likely create a new taste under center for the Fighting Irish if he stays healthy this season. Leonard will have the chance to bring a new twist to the Fighting Irish which could be extremely promising for high-level fantasy production in 2024. Assuming Leonard gains clearance as expected, his production as the play-caller and dual threat could be a spectacle if the ankle issues are mitigated. Read Past Outlooks
Efficient in Opening Win
September 1, 2024
Leonard completed 18-of-30 passes for 158 yards and more importantly did not throw an interception in his Notre Dame debut, a 23-13 victory at Texas A&M on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
The new Irish quarterback was very effective running the ball with 63 yards on a dozen carries. Leonard faced a trial by fire against a defense that might be the toughest he will face in the 2024 regular season. The senior transfer from Duke could face an easier task in the home opener, Sept. 7 against Northern Illinois. The Huskies though were seventh in the nation against the pass in 2023.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Riley Leonard was one of the best surprises of the 2022 season, seemingly coming from nowhere to throw for 2,967 yards, a sterling 20:6 TD:INT ratio, while also gashing defenses for 699 yards and 13 scores with his legs. Can he provide an encore? Leonard’s legs should keep him from bottoming out, but the passing success was sporadic throughout his breakout, four times going for 290 yards or better but six times being limited to 173 yards or fewer. That may make him better suited as a matchup play than a top option to anchor squads nationally. And it’s not a knock on Leonard, but much of his success is scheme based by head coach Mike Elko and offensive coordinator Kevin Johns. That’s not going to change in 2023, but Duke still has a lack of overall dynamic weapons around Leonard. In no way are we expecting Leonard to bust in 2023, but asking for a repeat of last season may be the best case scenario, while growing statistically a long shot.
Leonard spent his freshman campaign serving as backup to Gunnar Holmberg. With Holmberg transferring to FIU, Leonard is set to open his sophomore season as the starting quarterback for the Blue Devils. Leonard appeared in six games in 2021 in which he completed 37-of-62 passes for 381 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while also managing to add 173 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Leonard will be learning a new offense under Kevin Johns who comes over from Memphis. Johns will likely spread things out and try to get the ball to his playmakers in open spaces. Leonard’s main options will likely be wide receivers Jalon Calhoun, who led the team in touchdown catches last season with three, Eli Pancol and running back Jordan Waters.
