Named starting QB for Week 1
August 17, 2025
Layne has been named New Mexico's starting quarterback for Week 1, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
New Mexico's fall camp saw Layne and James Laubstein compete to be starting quarterback. Thamel's report indicates that the former won out their competition. Compared to Laubstein, Layne brings much more experience, albeit at a non-FBS level. Idaho's 2024 season includes his 94 completions for 1,389 yards and 12 touchdowns. While decent, he may require continual monitoring, considering his 54.7 completion percentage, 12-5 TD-INT ratio and limited run ability leave more to be desired.
