Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
2012
After totaling 1,922 yards and 11 touchdowns from scrimmage in 12 games last year, Abdullah could be overvalued this season. It's simply difficult to post consecutive 1,900-yard seasons, and Abdullah doesn't supplement his yardage with many touchdowns. He has just 17 touchdowns on his last 507 carries, largely due to teammate Imani Cross (10 touchdowns in 2013) stealing red-zone attempts. And Cross and Terrell Newby likely will see more carries in 2014 after combining for just 139 rushes last year. Abdullah's value is more stable in PPR leagues as he has 50 catches the last two years.
Abdullah was a big-time fantasy factor once starter Rex Burkhead suffered an injury in 2012, and Burkhead's graduation since then has Abdullah poised for a monstrous 2013 season. Despite losing 98 carries to Burkhead and 52 carries to Braylon Heard, who has since transferred to Kentucky, Abdullah totaled 1,137 yards and eight touchdowns while returning a punt for a touchdown and adding 178 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver. Nebraska returns four fifths of its offensive line and should possess a strong offense, allowing Abdullah to significantly increase his touchdown total.
Abdullah enters his sophomore season in a similar role to the one he held in his first year in Lincoln. Abdullah had 42 carries last season for 150 yards, third on the team and second amongst running backs. Nebraska loves to run, but it really only uses starting running back Rex Burkhead and quarterback Taylor Martinez on the ground. Those two combined for 36.1 carries per game last season. Abdullah's carries might go up slightly with fellow backup running back Aaron Green transferring, but barring an injury to Burkhead he still won't get enough touches to warrant decent fantasy value for the 2012 season.
