2024 Tournament PreviewThe Big Ten tournament champion, Illinois is stellar offensively, ranking third nationally in efficiency (per KenPom). The charge is led by 6-6 senior guard Terrence Shannon Jr. (23.0 ppg), who drives to the basket with the force of a fully developed NBA player. Shannon, who missed six midseason games because of off-court trouble, showed his capabilities in the conference tournament with a tourney-record 40 points in the semifinals followed by 34 in the final. SIU transfer Marcus Domask (16.0 ppg) is a solid secondary option, with 6-10 Coleman Hawkins (12.4 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and 6-8 Quincy Guerrier (10.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg) providing second-chance opportunities, as Illinois ranks 17th nationally in offensive rebounding rate. But the Illini lack a traditional point guard, which could haunt them in the tournament, and are 93rd in defensive efficiency (per KenPom), including bottom-3 in the country at forcing turnovers. It's tough to win six in a row with that type of identity.
