Is sports betting legal in New Jersey?

Fact Checked By: Hunter Hewitt

Yes. New Jersey was one of the first states to legalize sports betting and online wagering after the 2018 Supreme Court decision. In fact, New Jersey is one of the main reasons every state has the power to legalize sports betting after they pushed the Supreme Court to rule the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) as unconstitutional.

That said, New Jersey has a few restrictions that other legalized states don't. Most notably, you cannot bet on college teams from New Jersey or any college events taking place in New Jersey.

Daily Fantasy Sports were formally legalized in 2017 which set up a licensing process for prospective operators and the minimum playing age to 18 years old.

As for the places you can bet, there is a wide range of online sportsbooks, with all of them having at least one connection to a physical book. Of note, each New Jersey sports betting license holder is permitted to have three online skins which is why some online gambling sites are connected to the same physical casino.
