Bet Types at Arizona Sportsbooks

Arizona sports betting features many different kinds of bet types for both professional and collegiate sports. With no restrictions on betting types in the state, other than college props, both the retail and online sportsbooks in Arizona feature many different ways to bet on a game. Here is a detailed list of the types of wagers bettors can enjoy at Arizona betting sites.

Spreads

Spreads, or point spreads, are one of the most common bet types for sports betting in Arizona. For spreads, the matchup's favorite is given a handicap, in order for the sportsbooks to receive action on both sides of the bet.

For example, let's say the Arizona Cardinals are a 5.5-point favorite over the Seattle Seahawks. The Cardinals would have a spread of -5.5. Betting on them would mean they must win by six or more points for you to win the bet and cover the spread. For the other side, the Seahawks spread would be +5.5. A wager on that side would hit if Seattle won the game or lost by fewer than six points.

Totals

Totals bets, or an over/under bet, if most often used when picking whether the two teams will combine to score more (over) or less (under) than the number provided. Arizona online sportsbooks offer totals bets for full games, halves, individual periods, and more.

For example, if you see a total for the Arizona Diamondbacks game set at 8.5 and bet the over, the two teams must combine to score nine or more runs to win the bet. If the two teams combine to score fewer than nine points, you would lose the bet.

Moneyline

The most simple bet type for sports betting in Arizona is the moneyline bet. For this, you are simply picking the winner of the game or match. Odds for moneyline bets on Arizona sports betting sites can range from +100 (even money) to plus or minus numbers as high as 2000, in extreme circumstances for games that are expected to be lopsided.

The betting odds listed for the favored team will be listed as a negative number, like -160, meaning you have to risk $160 to win $100. For the underdog, the odds will have a positive number, like +185, meaning you only need to risk $100 to win $185.

While you can wager less than $100 on a moneyline bet on Arizona sportsbooks, American odds are based on betting or winning $100.

Prop Bets

Prop bets ware wagers on smaller in-game events instead of the outcome of the entire game. Betting on props could include team props, such as betting a team's points scored, or individual player props, such as a player hitting a homerun. Props allow sports fans to have action on a game without predicting the final result.

Futures

Futures bets are wagers placed on a larger future event. The most common type of futures the Arizona users place is on a league's championship, such as the odds to win the 2023 NBA Finals. Other examples of futures bets may include individual awards, such as Coach of the Year or league MVP, whether a team makes or misses the playoffs, the first pick in a league's draft, and more.

Since futures wagers are often placed weeks or months in advance of the bet being graded, it makes them risky, but the odds reflect this.

Parlays

Parlay bets are wagers that combine multiple different bets together to create a larger payout, but all legs must win for the entire parlay to cash. This makes parlays more difficult to win, which is why the odds are longer. AZ sports betting parlays can feature moneylines, spreads, totals, and prop bets across different sports.

For example, a three-leg parlay could have Cardinals -7.5, Suns-Lakers over 209.5 points, and Coyotes +185. If all three bets in the parlay hit, it could lead to a big payout. However, if one of the bets loses, then the entire parlay is graded as a loss.

Teasers

A teaser bet allows you to shift the spreads or totals in a parlay collectively up or down in order to make it easier to hit. While this reduces the risk of the parlay, it also makes the betting odds less profitable.

For example, a parlay taking the Cardinals -7.5, Suns-Jazz over 209.5 points, and the Arizona State Sun Devils +2.5 has +597 odds. A four-point teaser would move the lines to Cardinals -3.5, Suns-Jazz over 205.5 points, and Arizona State +6.5 for +165 odds

Live Betting

AZ sports betting offers live betting, or in-game betting. Live betting allows bettors to place wagers on an outcome while the game is taking place. Based on what is happening in the game, the spread, total, and other odds and bets will update. This creates opportunities to place wagers on different odds and outcomes than were previously available.

For example, let's pretend the Arizona Wildcats were -5.5 against the USC Trojans. However, after the Trojans began the game on a 12-0 run, the Arizona sportsbooks may have updated the spread to Arizona -1.5. This gives bettors the opportunity to bet on the Wildcats or Trojans at the updated spread and odds.

What Sports Can I Bet On In Arizona?

The sports market overall has recently grown in the state of Arizona, making it a destination for sports fans looking to attend a game or bet on sports. Arizona sports betting went live in 2021 and became very popular quickly, due to a large number of popular professional and collegiate sports teams. While betting on college props is restricted in the state, there are many other options for Arizona online sports betting.

NFL Betting in AZ

Amongst all sports for sports betting in Arizona, NFL betting is the most popular choice. Much like other sports betting markets, the NFL brings in the most money for the Arizona betting market. With the massive popularity of the league and the number of betting options available to bettors, it's not a surprise.

The Arizona Cardinals, behind the leadership of Kyler Murray and J.J. Watt, have improved as a team and positioned themselves to be contenders in NFL. Arizona sports bettors can place a wager on them to win the Super Bowl, make the playoffs, win the NFC West, defeat their weekly opponent, and much more. There are also prop bets available for their popular players and AZ bettors can use any of the best NFL betting sites to place wagers.

NBA Betting in AZ

The NBA may be the most player-focused league of any sports league, which has led to the popularity of NBA betting. While betting on futures, such as Coach of the Year, NBA MVP, or the NBA Championship winner are very popular options, as are the spreads and totals of games, NBA player props are an increasingly popular way to bet on the NBA.

With the Phoenix Suns being one of the top teams in the NBA, Arizona is a great place for NBA betting. Fans can bet over or under the point total for Devin Booker or if Chris Paul will finish with a double-double on any given night.

MLB Betting in AZ

With stats being a massive part of baseball, it's no wonder that MLB betting is so popular as well. The MLB has many games every single day of their long season, giving Arizona bettors many chances to make money. Fans can bet on the Arizona Diamondbacks, or other MLB teams, to win the World Series, make the playoffs, win their division, or bet on the outcome of any game.

Diamondbacks fans are also able to bet on player props for the team, including Christian Walker hitting a home run, Merrill Kelly's total strikeouts, and much more.

NHL Betting in AZ

The NHL is growing in popularity amongst sports fans, and NHL betting is growing in popularity along with it. While it has been some time since the Arizona Coyotes have been good, sports bettors in Arizona can still bet on them to win, lose, miss the playoffs, and much more. Hockey fans can bet on other NHL teams in Arizona as well, with many different betting options available.

College Football Betting in AZ

With both the Arizona Wildcats and Arizona State Sun Devils both competing in the Pac-12, college football betting in Arizona is a popular choice. No, bettors in the state will not be able to place college player props. However, AZ sports betting still allows college football fans to bet on the outcome of games, division winners, the College Football Playoff, and much more.

College Basketball Betting in AZ

College basketball betting continues to grow in popularity in Arizona. The Arizona Wildcats have been one of the best programs in the NCAA for several years, the Arizona State Sun Devils are competitive in the Pac-12, and even the Grand Canyon Antelopes found a way to make their first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2021.

March Madness is one of the most popular sports betting events of the year. It's the time of year when college basketball is on every television, and millions of dollars are won on these college basketball games. Again, college prop bets are not available in Arizona, but every other college basketball bet type is available across the Arizona sports betting sites.

Which Arizona Teams Can I Bet On?

The state of Arizona in recent years has become a destination for many professional athletes. As a result, the entire Arizona sports industry is booming, which makes it so intriguing from a sports betting perspective.

There are many different sports teams in Arizona to bet on. For professional sports, Arizona is home to the Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Coyotes and Arizona Diamondbacks. With both the Cardinals and Suns being contenders in their respective leagues, Arizona is a prime destination to both bet on and attend a game.

Arizona also has great college sports programs to bet on, including the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils and Grand Canyon Antelopes. While college prop betting is not available, Arizona sports bettors can enjoy all other bet types for their college sports wagers

Arizona Diamondbacks

While the Arizona Diamondbacks have not been too competitive lately, we have seen quick turnarounds in the MLB. Arizona sports betting apps offer many different ways for you to bet on the Diamondbacks and the rest of the league. You could bet on them to make the playoffs, win the World Series, win their next game, or pick where they will finish in the division. There are also hundreds of different prop bets available for every single game, creating many different MLB betting opportunities.

Arizona Coyotes

While the physical home of the Arizona Coyotes is in question, their virtual home for Arizona online sports betting is not in question. If you have faith in the Coyotes, you can bet on them to make the playoffs or bet the over on their projected win total for next season. Of course, if history repeats itself, you could make more money betting on the Coyotes' opponents. Either way, there is a betting option regardless of which side of the fence you are on.

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have pushed their chips to the middle and are looking to contend right now. Bet on the Cardinals to win the Super Bowl, make the playoffs, win the NFC West, go over their win total, win on any given week, and much more. Arizona online sportsbooks will also have betting odds available for touchdowns scored, yards totaled, awards won, and more for this season. So, don't miss out on making money if Kyler Murray pulls off another Hail Mary this season.

Arizona State Sun Devils

While they oftentimes play second fiddle to their in-state rivals, the Arizona State Sun Devils sports program is a respected one for many sports. Playing in the Pac-12, you can expect to see the Sun Devils on television often during every season. Bet on them to win or lose any given night, and even place bets on them to win during March Madness or the college bowl season.

Grand Canyon Antelopes

The Grand Canyon Antelopes, or Lopes, continue to build up and improve their athletic program. In 2021, we saw GCU make their very first NCAA Tournament, proving they are raising their college basketball competitiveness. Bet on the Lopes during March Madness or on their other sports teams throughout the year.

Arizona Wildcats

The sports program for the Arizona Wildcats is a respected one, especially when it comes to college basketball. Fans are able to bet on Arizona during March Madness, to shock the country in the Pac-12 during the college football season, and beat their in-state rivals during every other college sports season. The only thing fans are unable to bet on is player props for the Wildcats.

Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns have championship aspirations. After falling just short in 2021, the teams and fans alike are getting that championship itch. Fans can bet on the Suns to finally get over the hump and win this season's NBA Finals. Arizona sports betting sites will also have odds for the team to make the playoffs, win/lose the next game, and much more, as well as odds on player props for Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and the rest of the players.

Phoenix Mercury

Footprint Center in Phoenix is also home to the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA. Much like their NBA counterparts, there are plenty of betting types that can be placed for every single game. Arizona bettors can bet the spread, prop bets for individual players, and much more. Bettors can also place wagers on the Mercury during the games through live betting.

Arizona Sports Betting Bill

Bill HB 2772 was signed into law on April 15, 2021, legalizing sports betting in Arizona. This legislation made it so anyone that is at least 21 years old and inside state lines could participate in Arizona sports betting. It prohibits prop bets to be placed on college athletes. The bill also made the Arizona Department of Gaming the regulatory agency for sports betting in the state.

The Arizona sports betting bill allows for 20 sports betting licenses, with half going to Native American tribes and the other half to professional sports teams and other Arizona organizations. Each license holder can have one retail location and two online sportsbooks. To apply for a sports betting license, sportsbooks must pay $100,000, then $750,000 for their initial licenses and another $150,000 to renew annually. Finally, the state online sports betting tax is 10%, while the retail sport betting tax in Arizona is 8%.

Arizona Sports Betting Legislation

Arizona sports betting is live and legal in the state, regulated by the Arizona Department of Gaming. Sports betting was officially signed it into law in Arizona in April 2021 by Governor Doug Ducey. However, it took until September 2021 for AZ sports betting to go live and be available for everyone in the state who is at least 21 years old.

The Arizona sports betting laws in place allow for sports betting on all professional and college sports. The one restriction is that Arizona bettors cannot place prop bets on collegiate sports.

Below is a brief history of the Arizona sports betting market, starting with the most recent timeline updates:

  • November 14, 2023: ESPN BET launches in 17 states including Arizona.
  • October 2, 2023: Starting from October 11, 2023, bettors will no longer have access to their WynnBET accounts in Arizona.

  • 2020: Sen. Sonny Borrelli and Rep. Steve Pierce reintroduced the legislation to legalize AZ sports betting. Again, the bills found little momentum in the Senate and received no House votes.
  • 2019: The first introduction of legislation that would legalize Arizona sports betting was brought forth by Sen. Sonny Borrelli and Rep. Steve Pierce. However, the bills found no momentum.
