After three seasons at Texas Tech, Shannon transferred to Illinois and became a star. In 2023-24, the 6-foot-6 guard averaged 23.0 points (48/36/80 shooting splits), 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.9 blocks, landing First-Team All-Big Ten and Third-Team All-American honors. Shannon also led the Illini to a Big Ten Tournament championship, earning the Most Outstanding Player award. However, the season was clouded by legal trouble. In December of 2023, Shannon was charged with two felonies and suspended indefinitely by Illinois. Ultimately, he finished his final collegiate season after being granted a restraining order and was found not guilty of the charges just a few weeks before the 2024 NBA Draft. The legal trouble and being one of the oldest prospects in the 2024 class led to Shannon falling on draft day. He was selected by Minnesota with the 27th overall pick and joins a loaded backcourt. Mike Conley and Anthony Edwards will start, while Donte DiVincenzo and Nickeil Alexander-Walker will be the primary backups. Minnesota also signed Joe Ingles in free agency and drafted Rob Dillingham 19 picks ahead of Shannon. Shannon's path to NBA minutes is too crowded to make him worthy of a roster spot in standard leagues, but his offensive upside should have fantasy managers' interest if he's ever given a 20-minute role. $Signed a two-year, $5.22 million contract with the Timberwolves in July of 2024. Contract includes $2.8 million team option for 2026-27.
Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
From Chicago, IL, Shannon played for Lincoln Park in high school but didn't have any D1 offers, so he reclassified and transferred to IMG Academy where he thrived en route being a consensus four-star recruit. He originally committed to DePaul before switching to Texas Tech. He was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman team but didn't show drastic improvement in his final two seasons as a Red Raider before moving to Champaign. Shannon's final collegiate season was interrupted in December after being suspended indefinitely by Illinois. He was reinstated in January after the school's investigation ended with insufficient evidence and was allowed to finish the 2023-24 campaign. Shannon was named first-team All-Big Ten, third-team All-American and was the 2024 Big Ten Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, as he led Illinois to a championship win over Wisconsin. He averaged 23 points per game on 57/36/80 shooting splits for the season and dropped 34 on the Badgers. Shannon is at his best when he's going downhill in transition. When defenders give him space, he's more than capable of knocking down open looks off the dribble. At 6-foot-6, Shannon has the size and athleticism to guard multiple positions, and he has great defensive instincts, though he tends to take too many chances in the passing lanes. Shannon is a gifted offensive player, and that should translate to the NBA, but he may need to refine his game before becoming a prominent player. At 23 years old, he's older than most prospects in his class, but that doesn't mean he can't make strides over the next few years. Shannon is a couple of inches taller than guys like De'Aaron Fox and Vince Williams but may have just as much offensive upside as those players. However, Shannon isn't a natural point guard, so Kelly Oubre Jr. may be a more just comparison.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set for expanded role
FMinnesota Timberwolves
May 26, 2025
Shannon is expected to see more minutes in the rest of the Western Conference Finals series against the Thunder after turning heads with his play in the Game 3 win on Saturday, head coach Chris Finch told Cassidy Hettesheimer of The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I've been wrestling with getting another guy in the rotation," Finch said. "A guy that could stretch the floor in transition, be a downhill player, got a good body, physicality. ... We kind of knew coming into the game that we were going to get to him. You're definitely going to see him more."
ANALYSIS The rookie out of Illinois took advantage of his opportunity in the blowout win in Game 3 on Saturday, finishing with 15 points across 13 minutes and providing a massive spark off the bench. He's not expected to crack the starting unit any time soon, but there's no doubt he's going to see more minutes off the bench due to his ability to stretch the floor and bring energy on both sides of the ball.
