2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Trail Blazers have three capable players for two backcourt spots, but given Anfernee Simons' impressive numbers in 2023-24, it seems Sharpe will battle with Scoot Henderson to operate as Simons' guard pairing. Don't be surprised if Sharpe wins the battle, although he'll have to stay healthy to do so, and that has been a big "if" throughout his first two years in The Association. The signs of progress are clear in terms of pure numbers, though. Sharpe averaged 15.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.9 steals across 33.1 minutes per game, all career-high marks, across 32 appearances (25 starts). If Sharpe stays healthy, which is expected to be the case for the 2023-24 campaign, then he should see enough minutes and touches to be a reliable fantasy asset regardless of his role. If he earns a starting role over Henderson, however, his already-high fantasy upside should take another bump. He should be targeted as a mid-to-late alternative across all formats solely based on his scoring potential, and he should be an even better player to target in dynasty formats. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Shaedon Sharpe was born in May of 2003 in London, Ontario, Canada. There, he played basketball for H.B. Beal Secondary School and led his team to the 2018 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA title. As a sophomore, he transferred to Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas. As a junior, he transferred to Dream City Christian School in Glendale, Arizona and stepped into a big role. Sharpe also played AAU for team UPLAY Canada. Representing the Canadian national team at the 2019 U16 Americas Championship, he averaged 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 21 minutes per game while the team won the silver medal. Sharpe was the No. 1 player in the 2022 high school class before reclassifying to the 2021 class, where he was ranked as the third-best player by 247Sports and Rivals. His success at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball league in 2021 helped vault his recruiting grade after being unranked by major recruiting services early in high school. Sharpe graduated early from high school and redshirted his freshman year at Kentucky (2021-22). But he never played a game for the Wildcats. After the redshirt season, Sharpe declared for the 2022 NBA Draft, forgoing his remaining college eligibility. With the seventh overall pick, Sharpe was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Trail Blazers announced Tuesday that Sharpe (abdomen) will miss the rest of the season.
ANALYSIS
Sharpe underwent abdominal surgery in January, and while he has resumed taking part in full-contact workouts in recent days, Portland feels no need to bring him back for the final four games of the season. He finishes his age-20 campaign with averages of 15.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.9 three-pointers and 0.9 steals in 33.1 minutes per game over 32 appearances (25 starts). Sharpe should face few restrictions -- if any -- during the offseason.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Portland took a big swing on Sharpe with a 2022 lottery pick, but the 19-year-old hit the ground running and was essentially a rotation player from Day 1. Now entering his age-20 season, Sharpe will be counted upon to take on a much larger role after the Trail Blazers traded Damian Lillard to the Bucks this offseason. For much of his rookie season, Sharpe was limited to 15-to-20 minutes per night off the bench - a role in which he was still able to show plenty of encouraging flashes. But the final 10 games of the regular season, when Portland finally turned Sharpe loose, are what fantasy managers are still dreaming about. During that stretch, Sharpe started all 10 games and posted 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.9 steals and 3.1 made threes in 35.9 minutes per game. He shot 46.0 percent from the field while knocking down nearly 38 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Of course, it's worth noting that Lillard, Jerami Grant, Jusuf Nurkic and Anfernee Simons were inactive for all 10 of those games, so Sharpe was truly acting as the Blazers' No. 1 option. With Simons and Grant - as well as No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson - entrenched on the roster, Sharpe will move back to more of a complementary role, but he should be in line to start on the wing and earn major minutes on a nightly basis. For fantasy purposes, Sharpe should be a solid source of points, threes and rebounds while chipping in some assists and steals.
A late-riser up the prospect charts, Sharpe was essentially off the radar until late in high school. And while he committed to play collegiately at Kentucky, he never saw the floor, opting to sit out the year to better prepare for the NBA. That's created an air of mystery around the Canadian wing, who went No. 7 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft to the Trail Blazers. Sharpe's minimal Summer League action before suffering a labral tear in his left shoulder - he's expected to be ready for camp - adds to the mystery. Sharpe compares his game to Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that his strengths are ballhandling and perimeter shooting. However, he's a better vertical athlete than the pair, sporting an unofficially-measured 40-plus-inch vertical leap. That athleticism also allows him to make contortionist layups that other shooting guards can't. His off-ball defense is lacking, but, in theory, strong NBA coaching can fix that. He at least has the physical tools to be disruptive on that end. But, for as much potential as he has, it's not clear if he'll play enough as a rookie to be fantasy relevant. Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons are starting in the backcourt, and Sharpe will have to compete against Gary Payton, Josh Hart and Keon Johnson for backup minutes. A best-case scenario is probably a sixth-man role, but that's pretty optimistic. For now, Sharpe is a better target in keeper/dynasty leagues.

Set for starting role in 2024-25?
GPortland Trail Blazers
August 3, 2024
Sharpe is expected to open the 2024-25 season as a regular starter, according to Sean Highkin of Rose Garden Report.
ANALYSIS
Sharpe has been bothered by injuries in his first two seasons in the NBA, and he was limited to just 32 appearances in 2023-24 due to an abdomen injury that kept him sidelined after January. Sharpe showed progress in 2023-24, however, as he averaged 15.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.9 three-pointers and 0.9 steals in 33.1 minutes per game over 32 regular-season appearances. He's expected to start alongside Anfernee Simons in the backcourt, a move that would push Scoot Henderson to a bench role.
