2024 Fantasy Outlook
After two seasons of the Raptors hanging in the 40-win range, the team committed to a rebuild in the middle of last season, trading away both Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby. That effectively turned Barnes into Toronto's best player and building block of the future. He made his first All-Star game behind averages of 19.9 points on 48/34/78 shooting, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals. He took significant steps forward as a passer, three-point shooter and shot-blocker, helping him return second-round category league value on a per-game basis. It's expected to be another rebuilding season for the Raptors, led primarily by Barnes but also Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett. The latter two will get plenty of usage, but Barnes should remain the focal point. At just 23 years old and making significant strides in an advantageous situation, Barnes has the makings of a potential early-round sleeper. The conditions are present for him to sneak into the first round this season, though on teams with incentive to tank, there's always an inherent risk of late-season resting. In that sense, he's less secure as a fantasy asset than he might otherwise be. Read Past Outlooks

Barnes started his prep school journey at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, where he earned MaxPreps Freshman All-American honors. In October of 2019, Barnes committed to Florida State University. At FSU, Barnes started seven of 24 games as a freshman (2020-21) and posted 10.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.5 steals over 24.8 minutes per game. He also shot 50.3 percent from the field. Barnes was named 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year, ACC Sixth Man of the Year and Third Team All-ACC. In April of 2021, he declared for the NBA Draft and was selected with the fourth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
The 2021-22 Rookie of the Year saw his development stall as part of a tough season overall for the Raptors that got coach Nick Nurse fired. Barnes traded some rebounds for assists as he took on more ball-handling duties, but his efficiency and three-point shooting both took steps backward, and the rest of his production stagnated. About 15 points a game with 10 boards-plus-assists and two blocks-plus-steals is still a solid fantasy package, but the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft seems capable of much more given his athleticism and skill set. Still just 21 years old, the Florida State product remains a key piece of Toronto's core, but as the last members of the team's championship roster from a few years ago slip away, the front office seems caught between trying to stay competitive and executing a full teardown around Barnes. With Dennis Schroder replacing Fred VanVleet at point guard, Barnes' usage could increase once again, but Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby and Jakob Poeltl will all be looking for the ball as well. Barnes will have to focus on improving his offensive game if he wants to reach the next level, rather than being one of many complementary assets on a balanced Raptors squad that needs someone to step up as the lead dog. He's got the upside and the opportunity to become a fantasy star in 2023-24, but he also has a lot to prove.
The fourth overall pick out of Florida State in the 2021 NBA Draft, Barnes played his way into 2021-22 Rookie of the Year honors. He came out of the gates hot, scoring in double figures in his first eight appearances, and he didn't slow down The versatile forward averaged 15.3 points on 49/30/74 shooting, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 combined steals-plus-blocks. He had plenty of big games, most notably a performance in a 36-point win over the Nets where the rookie posted 28 points (12-14 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 3-4 FT), 16 rebounds (nine offensive), five steals, four assists and one block in 34 minutes. The overall result was Barnes ranking 70th in per-game fantasy value. The next step for the 21-year-old will be improving his shooting. He took a modest 2.6 threes per game and made them at 30.1 percent, and his free-throw percentage (73.5) leaves a bit to be desired. With the rest of his game already polished and the Raptors running a lot of small-ball, his lack of floor-spacing isn't a major issue for the team. He should make improvements overall this season, but Barnes' ceiling is a bit capped given that Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet are above him in the pecking order, and OG Anunoby gets his fair share of touches as well. Barnes should be drafted before pick 70, but expecting a leap into All-Star status might be unrealistic.
Barnes was somewhat of a surprising pick by the Raptors at No. 4, but there's no question that he has the frame and skill set to develop into the best defender in the draft. At 6-foot-9, 230 pounds, Barnes has the body of a forward, but he spent most of his time at point guard as a freshman at Florida State last season. The major knock on Barnes is that he's a poor shooter (27.5% 3PT; 62.1% FT last season), but he's an effective finisher at the rim who can rebound, pass, block shots and defend virtually any position. Long-term, Toronto's hope is that it can develop Barnes into the next evolution of Draymond Green, but Barnes may not have a major fantasy impact in his rookie season. Concerns about the jumpshot aside, Barnes joins a talented roster that already features Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, and Precious Achiuwa up front, with Fred VanVleet, Goran Dragic and Malachi Flynn as options at point guard. Nick Nurse will find a role for Barnes, but his fantasy floor is not as high as the other elite prospects in the 2021 Draft class.

Shot remains a focus
FToronto Raptors
October 1, 2024
Barnes highlighted his shot creation and getting "to his spots more efficiently" as key points of development this offseason.
ANALYSIS
Barnes also mentioned on-ball reps in Toronto's set plays and improvement in getting downhill to the basket as other focal points. The 23-year-old ascended to career-high marks of 34.1 percent shooting on 4.9 threes per game over 60 regular-season contests, but he still connected on just 32.3 percent of his off-the-dribble jumpers -- which ranked in the 21st percentile league-wide.
