Makes trio of threes
GDallas Mavericks
October 30, 2024
Grimes ended with nine points (3-5 FG, 3-5 3Pt), one rebound and one steal across 12 minutes during Tuesday's 120-114 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS Grimes entered Tuesday's contest having missed his first three three-point attempts of the season. The 24-year-old has the upside to become a consistent shooter in the Mavericks' offense, but his role will be inconsistent if his shot isn't falling.

Tom Thibodeau is notorious for giving players he loves massive minutes, and that was certainly the case for Grimes last year. The rookie played just 29.9 minutes a night during the regular season but played 42 and 48 minutes in two of this team's final three playoff games. Seeing a sophomore play a full 48 minutes is absurd, but it's less surprising when you see his 37-minute average over the final three weeks of the regular season. That would usually have us ecstatic about his fantasy value in his third year, but the signing of Donte DiVincenzo is discouraging. These two play the same position, and it seems unlikely Grimes plays more than 30 minutes unless there are some injuries in this rotation. It's not like the fantasy profile is glowing either, averaging 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.7 steals and 2.2 threes on 46.8 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from three-point range. He's one of the better shooters in the NBA, but his role is going in the wrong direction. He wasn't even a significant part of this offense before, with Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, Josh Hart and R.J. Barrett asked to do so much. All of that should have Grimes going undrafted in most fantasy formats.
Despite having a sporadic role during his rookie season, there has been an element of hype surrounding Grimes heading into 2022-23. While a trade could have opened up more minutes, he should still feature heavily in the rotation despite the competition for minutes. Exactly Grimes will claim remains to be seen, making him more of a late-round flier at the moment. However, if he can expand his workload, he could be a sneaky source of points, threes and steals.
Grimes was selected by the Knicks with the 25th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. In his third collegiate season at Houston, the guard averaged 17.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals in 32.7 minutes. The 6-foot-5, 21-year-old shot an exceptional 40.3 percent from behind the three-point arc. He'll probably start as a 3-and-D player but has at least shown some upside to become a more dynamic player and possibly a secondary ballhandler. In Summer League, he averaged 15.3 points (3.7 3PM on 40.7%), 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 32.8 minutes. The rookie probably won't see consistent minutes unless the Knicks are dealing with a myriad of injuries.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could land in bigger role
GDallas Mavericks
October 9, 2024
Grimes might get more minutes than expected for the Mavericks to begin the season after Shams Charania of ESPN reported Wednesday that Dante Exum will miss three months due to wrist surgery.
ANALYSIS Luka Doncic, who's dealing with a minor calf issue in training camp, and Kyrie Irving are still locked into starting jobs and massive workloads in the backcourt. However, Grimes could see a consistent role with the second unit while Exum is recovering. Grimes dealt with a knee injury late last season after being traded from the Knicks to the Pistons, but he appears to be fully healthy in training camp with Dallas. Veteran Spencer Dinwiddie and third-year guard Jaden Hardy will also be in the mix for minutes behind Doncic and Irving.
