Despite putting together a career-best season, Toppin struggled to be anything more than a borderline standard league asset. After opening the 2023-24 season as a member of the starting unit, he shifted to the bench in late December, a spot that he held for the remainder of the campaign. Outside of some sporadic scoring, Toppin did very little to get us excited, finishing as the 151st-ranked player. His numbers were reflective of his role, averaging 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.2 three-pointers and 1.1 combined steals and blocks. With Pascal Siakam now signed to a long-term deal, the path to minutes for Toppin is murky, to say the least. He should continue to play as a valuable piece off the bench, something the coaching staff values highly given his new four-year deal. However, that typically doesn't translate to fantasy value, meaning he can be ignored outside of deeper formats. Should the Pacers suffer an injury to their frontcourt, Toppin could step into a larger role, making him someone to at least consider as a short-term pickup. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Obadiah Richard "Obi" Toppin was born Mar. 4, 1998 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Roni and Obadiah Toppin. Tobin has one sibling named Jacob. He was 6-foot-2 as a high school junior and has since grown to 6-foot-9. As a senior at Ossining High School in Ossining, New York, he averaged 20.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals. Toppin led that team to its first conference title in 10 years. For a postgraduate campaign, he enrolled at Mt. Zion Preparatory School in Baltimore, Maryland. Toppin then played college basketball at Dayton, where he studied media production. In 2020, as a redshirt sophomore, he was named National College Player of the Year and was a consensus First Team All-American. Fans can follow Toppin on Twitter @obitoppin1. Toppin played two seasons of collegiate ball at the University of Dayton, but saw a massive usage spike between his freshman and sophomore seasons. That, mixed with his prolific dunking ability, let to national attention and an eventual draft declaration as one of the league's top prospects. Toppin averaged 14.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists through 33 games (15 starts) as a freshman, but those marks improved to 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists through 31 games (all starts) as a sophomore. Toppin led the conference in field goals made (245) and field goal percentage (.633) en route to winning Atlantic Ten Player of the Year honors, but he wasn't done there. That sophomore season resulted in a full trophy case, as the consensus All-American was given Wooden Award honors, in addition to the Naismith and Karl Malone Awards. His team saw massive success as well, as the Flyers swept the Atlantic Ten conference and posted a 29-2 overall record. They were projected by many to get a No. 1 overall seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament, but the Flyers' title hopes ended when the tournament was eventually canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020
After another modest showing in 2022-23, Toppin now finds himself in Indiana, where the starting power forward job may be available. He will be competing with Jarace Walker for that role, with Toppin's experience likely to be a contributing factor. He was outside the top 300 last season, playing just 15.7 minutes per game. However, in the five games he started, he put up 21.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.2 three-pointers in 31.5 minutes per night. Direct translations are never a good idea, but this does at least demonstrate an ability to contribute across multiple categories. The Pacers are a team on the rise and will therefore be looking to push for the playoffs. They also have a tendency to ease rookies into things, rather than throwing them to the wolves, so to speak. Toppin's athleticism and ability to stretch the floor make him a nice fit alongside Myles Turner. If Toppin can finally carve out a consistent 26-minute role, whether as a starter or coming off the bench, he could be a sneaky target in the later rounds of drafts.
After a subpar rookie campaign and a mediocre first half of 2021-22, Toppin offered a glimpse of his abilities in the second half, averaging 14.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists over 23.0 minutes per game in 18 appearances following the All-Star break. Toppin was considered an old prospect leaving the draft, so the hope was he wouldn't require too much development, and the 24-year-old forward's third year could see him carve out a larger role in the Knicks' rotation. While Toppin hasn't developed a reliable shot from deep, he converted at a 53.1 percent clip last year from the field and connected on 75.8 percent of his free-throw attempts, both good enough marks to add some fantasy utility, especially if his playing time trend in the second half carries over into 2022-23. Toppin should resume his duties as a bench player for the Knicks with the same starting frontline -- Mitchell Robinson, Julius Randle and RJ Barrett -- set to return. Toppin should be one of the first off the bench and could move into the starting five consistently if Randle misses time.
The No. 8 overall pick in 2020, Toppin had a disappointing rookie season. While the Knicks exceeded expectations, Toppin failed to meet them while being stuck behind Julius Randle, who led the NBA in minutes and finished eighth in MVP voting. In his 11.0 minutes per game, Toppin averaged 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds with shooting splits of 50/31/73. It will again be tough for Toppin to find meaningful minutes. Randle is still around, and the Knicks maintained depth in the frontcourt while adding depth on the wing with Evan Fournier. It's certainly possible Toppin sees closer to 20 minutes per game rather than 10 minutes, but it still seems unlikely he'll be able to make an impact in fantasy. Encouragingly, he was great in Summer League, where he played six games and averaged 21.0 points on 45/34/89 shooting, 8.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 35.1 minutes.
The 22-year-old was considered by some to be a potential top-five selection, but the Knicks were able to grab him with the No. 8 pick in the 2020 Draft. Toppin finished his career at Dayton as a redshirt sophomore and averaged 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.2 blocks while shooting 63.3 percent overall and 39.0 percent on three-point attempts. He could immediately slide into the frontcourt rotation with Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson and figures to be one of the focal points of the rebuild. For fantasy, he should be a good source of points, rebounds and field-goal percentage with some upside as a defender who can produce both steals and blocks.
