Josh Green

23-Year-Old ForwardF
Charlotte Hornets
2024 Fantasy Outlook
After playing in Dallas for the first four years of his career, Green was traded to Charlotte during the offseason as part of the Klay Thompson deal. Despite a lack of offensive versatility, Green has been able to carve out a meaningful role for himself over the past two years. He finished with averages of 8.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.3 three-pointers in 26.4 minutes per game during the 2023-24 campaign. Now with the Hornets, Green could be in the discussion for a starting spot, potentially allowing him to play close to 30 minutes per game. However, playing alongside LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges and Brandon Miller will do Green no favors in terms of offensive opportunities. While he will serve as a key defensive piece for a team desperately seeking an identity, that is unlikely to translate to consistent fantasy value. Based on what we have seen from him to this point in his career, Green is not worth drafting outside of deeper leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Green was born Nov. 16, 2000 in Sydney, New South Wales. He was born to Australian mother Cahla and American-born father Delmas. Green began playing basketball at five years old, in suburban Syndey, when his mother began coaching him. Green also played Australian rules football, track athletics, rugby, soccer and swimming. By the time he was 10 years old, he had been selected to represent his home state in nine separate sports. Green loved playing Australian rules football. In November 2014, he and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. After impressing at his first American High School, Mountain Ridge, he transferred to IMG Academy in Florida, where he became a five-star draft prospect. During the final game of Green's high school career, he led IMG to a national title and was named MVP of the championship game. For college, he went to Arizona. After averaging 12.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals as a freshman, Green declared for the 2020 NBA Draft. Green started all 30 games he appeared in during his first and only collegiate season with Arizona. He put his scoring prowess on display right off the bat, scoring 22 points in the second game of the season against Illinois. Not long afterward, he set a career high with 24 points Nov. 28 against Pepperdine. He averaged 12.0 PPG when it was all said and done, which was bolstered by his outside shooting -- 36.1 percent from beyond the arc. The 6-6 guard was also capable on the defensive end, averaging 1.5 steals per contest, which was good for sixth in the Pac-12. He also had the fourth-best defensive plus/minus in the conference. Green and the Wildcats had done enough to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, but the event was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He officially entered the 2020 NBA Draft in early-April.

Offers little in starting role
FCharlotte Hornets
November 1, 2024
Green registered three points (1-4 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 0-2 FT), one rebound and one assist in 23 minutes during Friday's 124-109 loss to Boston.
ANALYSIS
Green was a non-factor in the loss, producing very little in terms of tangible numbers despite starting and playing 23 minutes. While he is a solid enough defensive presence, his efforts do not translate to meaningful value. He should continue to feature in the rotation, but nights like this are going to come more often than not.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
It took some time for Green to establish a role in Dallas last season, but he shined in the final months of the year. The 22-year-old wing started the final two months of his rookie season, averaging 10.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.4 steals and 1.3 threes on 52 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range. Green also played nearly 30 minutes a night in that span, doing most of that damage when either Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving was sidelined. That's the one unfortunate thing about playing for the Mavericks because it'll be tough for anyone else on this roster to be fantasy-relevant as long as those two are healthy. There's simply too much usage swallowed up by those superstars. With that said, this team needs shooters, and Green should be one of them. There's some thought that either Green or Tim Hardaway will start at the small forward position, but Hardaway looks like the preferred option in the early going. If that's the case, Green will have a hard time playing more than 25 minutes off of the bench, making him tough to trust from a fantasy perspective. He is just one injury away from falling into relevance, though, and he makes for an interesting waiver wire add if something happens to one of those studs.
Green's role with the Mavericks grew slightly in 2021-22, with the second-year forward averaging 4.8 points, 2.4 boards and 1.2 assists while logging 15.5 minutes per contest. He doubled his shot attempts from beyond the arc in his sophomore season and knocked them down at a more consistent 35.9 percent clip -- much more stomachable than the 16.0 percent he posted in limited attempts as a rookie. Nevertheless, Green's per-game output ranks him well out of the range of most fantasy formats, and his per-36 rank checked in at 269th, which also falls off most radars. Barring a significant increase in playing time, which is highly unlikely, Green figures to remain off draft boards in all but the deepest of leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set for starting role?
FCharlotte Hornets
September 23, 2024
Green is expected to open the 2024-25 season in a starting role for the Hornets, Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer speculates.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear if Green will start at shooting guard or small forward, but there's no question he'll bring some elements missing from the Hornets' lineup last season. Green, who was sent from Dallas to Charlotte in a six-team trade in July, brings flexibility to the lineup and can match up defensively with the opponent's best guard, helping LaMelo Ball stay out of foul trouble due to his defensive deficiencies. Green averaged 8.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists across 57 regular-season appearances, including 33 starts, during the 2023-24 regular season. The 33 starts were a career-high for Green, so he shouldn't have problems adjusting to a permanent role in the starting lineup with Charlotte.
