2025 Fantasy Outlook
Vanderbilt has appeared in only 65 regular-season games over the past two seasons. He ended the 2024-25 campaign healthy and will have a role in 2025-26, but given the injury concerns, it's safe to assume Vanderbilt will be used cautiously. With Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, LeBron James, Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton the likely starters, Vanderbilt will compete for reserve minutes with Marcus Smart, Dalton Knecht, Jake LaRavia and Maxi Kleber. Due to Vanderbilt's defensive prowess, he always finds himself in the rotation when healthy. However, it's hard to imagine him playing 20-plus minutes consistently when everyone is available. That doesn't mean he won't have any value. Vanderbilt has averaged 1.1 steals in 20.7 minutes per game over the past five seasons, and his elite per-36 defensive production is enough for fantasy managers to monitor his role throughout the season. Strong two-way performance in loss
Vanderbilt compiled nine points (4-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 0-1 FT), seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in 21 minutes during Sunday's 111-103 preseason loss to Golden State.
ANALYSIS
Vanderbilt remained in the starting lineup, a position he could very well find himself in come opening night. He brings a defensive presence to a team desperately in need of an identity on that end of the court. After having dealt with multiple injuries over the past couple of years, the hope is that Vanderbilt can stay healthy, allowing him to build some much-needed momentum. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, look for Vanderbilt to play minutes in the low to mid-20s on most nights.

A right mid-foot sprain limited Vanderbilt to only 29 regular-season appearances (six starts) during the 2023-24 campaign. The defensive-minded forward was an integral part of the Lakers' postseason rotation the previous year when Los Angeles advanced to the Western Conference Finals before ultimately losing to Denver. The Lakers lost to the Nuggets in last season's playoffs again, but this time it was a rare first-round exit for a LeBron James-led squad. The Lakers felt Vanderbilt's absence all season, as they constantly changed and shifted lineups looking for a spark. Now healthy, Vanderbilt is set to play an integral, cohesive role for the star-studded Lakers. He may not start in the frontcourt, but Vanderbilt should see consistent minutes regardless of his role. However, for fantasy purposes, there's not much to see. He's a solid rebounder and defender, but his outside shooting is a major concern. Vanderbilt is better utilized in non-category settings, but even then, he's not going to deliver enough production to be a must-roster player in standard leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Darkhorse candidate to start
Vanderbilt could be part of the Lakers' starting lineup in the 2025-26 regular season opener against the Warriors on Oct. 21, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report.
ANALYSIS
The Lakers have to make a massive decision regarding who's going to be the team's fifth starter alongside Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Austin Reaves and Deandre Ayton. Rui Hachimura, Jake LaRavia and Marcus Smart are candidates for the role, but Vanderbilt can't be ruled out, according to Pincus. Head coach JJ Redick has hyped up Vanderbilt's performances in camp, and his presence in the lineup would give the Lakers another viable two-way presence in the frontcourt, allowing LeBron James to play the three and limit the bruising that comes with playing as a power forward.
