2024 Fantasy Outlook
Butler returns for a second season in Washington after averaging career highs in points (6.3), assists (3.2), rebounds (1.5) and minutes (14.2) per game across 40 regular-season appearances last year. When given an expanded role, Butler was able to capitalize. He played at least 23 minutes six times and averaged 13.8 points, 8.8 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals during those contests. While Tyus Jones moved to Phoenix this offseason, the Wizards added Malcolm Brogdon via trade and drafted Carlton Carrington. Butler figures to be a reserve to open the season, but more minutes could become available if the Wizards fall out of contention and trade away veteran pieces. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Jared Gladwyn Butler was born in August of 2000 in Reserve, Louisiana. The guard is the son of Richard and Juanea Butler. In 2013-14, Butler began his high school career as just an eighth-grader on the Riverside Academy varsity basketball team which won three consecutive state titles from 2014 to 2016. In his senior season, Butler averaged 27.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 3.0 steals and was named the 2017-18 Player of the Year by the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Butler initially enrolled to play basketball at the University of Alabama but transferred before the start of his freshman season to Baylor where he averaged 10.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists and was named to the Big-12's All-Freshman team. As a sophomore, he led the Bears with 16 points per game and was named First Team All-Big 12. Butler initially declared for the 2020 NBA Draft, but ultimately decided to withdraw and returned to college. Baylor would go on to win the 2021 NCAA championship and Butler was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player. In May of 2021, Butler once again declared for the 2021 NBA Draft after graduating from Baylor in just under three years with a degree in Business-Management. He was selected with the 40th overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans, but was quickly traded to the Utah Jazz via the Memphis Grizzlies

The 76ers declined Butler's $2.35 million team option for the 2025-26 season Friday, making him an unrestricted free agent, Kyle Neubeck of AllPHLY.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Butler opened the past season on a two-way deal with the Wizards before he was traded in February to the 76ers, who eventually converted him to a standard NBA contract. The 24-year-old point guard turned in serviceable numbers when called upon by both Washington and Philadelphia, averaging 9.0 points, 3.7 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 three-pointers in 17.4 minutes over 60 games. Though he possesses decent playmaking and scoring skills, Butler hasn't proven to be much of a perimeter threat at the NBA level. Since he already has four NBA seasons under his belt, Butler is no longer eligible to sign a two-way contract, so he may have to settle for an Exhibit 10 contract or a non-guaranteed deal in free agency.

Having played a grand total of just 48 games during his first two years in the league, Butler will open the season with the Wizards. He managed just six games for the Thunder during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring 25 points in 46 minutes during the regular season finale. He will be on a two-way contract with his new team, meaning he could once again spend a lot of time in the G League. At this point, the Wizards would need to be in full tank mode for him to even be considered a viable fantasy target.
Butler was selected by the Jazz with the 40th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Butler had a strong third season at Baylor as he helped carry his team to an NCAA championship while averaging 16.7 points, 4.8 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals. The guard hit an impressive 47.1 percent from the field and 41.6 percent from behind the three-point arc in his final season at Baylor. He has upside as a microwave scorer at the NBA level, and if things pan out right, he could be a similar player to his teammate, Jordan Clarkson, though Butler probably has more defensive potential. That said, Butler probably won't see regular minutes this season.
