2024 Fantasy Outlook
Daniels was selected with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, but he has struggled to find consistent minutes so far in his career, first due to injury and then due to an influx of win-now talent on New Orleans' roster. He was dealt to the Hawks in the trade that sent Dejounte Murray to the Pelicans, and while Daniels is primed to come off the bench to start his Atlanta tenure, there's a chance he might be in line to see more minutes than what he saw with the Pelicans. To note, Daniels averaged just 22.3 minutes per game for the Pelicans in 2023-24, averaging 5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game while starting in 16 of his 61 appearances. His fit is a bit questionable next to Trae Young, and the backup role, paired with the fact that he's yet to prove himself in The Association, suggest Daniels should be left on waivers in most drafts outside of the very deep formats. Even in those unlikely scenarios, he's not expected to have a lot of upside as a backup guard who's shot 31.3 percent from three-point range in his NBA career. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Dyson James Daniels was born March 17, 2003 in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. His father, Ricky, is from the United States and played college basketball at NC State before going pro, becoming a two-time South East Australian Basketball League MVP with the Bendigo Braves. Daniels' older brother, Kai, played college basketball at Regis University. Dyson Daniels began playing basketball at seven years old. In addition to basketball, Daniels was also a talented Australian rules footballer and represented his home state of Victoria in several national football championships before focusing on basketball. In 2018, he represented Australia in the 2018 FIBA Oceania U15 Championship and helped his team win the gold medal behind 8.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. For the 2019 season, he signed with his father's former team, the Braves. He also joined the NBA Global Academy, a training center at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. In 2021, during the FIBA U19 World Cup, Daniels averaged 14.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.3 steals in 27 minutes per game. That year, he also made his senior team debut at the FIBA Asia Cup qualification and recorded 23 points, six steals and four assists in a win over New Zealand. Also in 2021, Daniels signed with the NBA G League Ignite. Starting all 14 of his appearances, he averaged 11.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals in 31.2 minutes. He also competed in the Rising Stars Challenge at the 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend. In the summer of 2022, the New Orleans Pelicans drafted Daniels with the eight overall pick.

All-around performance in loss
GAtlanta Hawks
August 2, 2024
Daniels tallied 11 points (4-7 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 1-3 FT), eight assists, six rebounds and one steal in 28 minutes Friday in the Australian national team's 77-71 loss to Greece in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
ANALYSIS
Daniels shot the ball efficiently from the field and led Australia in assists during Friday's loss. While Daniels is expected to be a backup option in Atlanta's backcourt after being acquired from New Orleans earlier in the offseason, the 21-year-old guard continues to feature prominently for his national team.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Despite playing limited minutes during his rookie season, Daniels flashed enough upside to keep fantasy managers on their toes heading into 2023-24. At this point, he presents as an elite wing defender, with the size to guard multiple positions. He has upside as a makeshift facilitator while providing solid rebound numbers from the guard position. It's hard to know exactly where he fits on opening night, although it's relatively safe to assume he will be in the rotation. The Pelicans have plenty of depth in their backcourt, with CJ McCollum, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy, Jose Alvarado, Jordan Hawkins and Daniels all vying for minutes. While it is unlikely Daniels plays enough to warrant significant fantasy attention, he is certainly someone to keep a close eye on should he be able to find his footing on the offensive end.
After spending 2021-22 with G League Ignite, Daniels heard his name called with the eighth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Pelicans. Daniels' Summer League action lasted just one game before an ankle injury sidelined him for the remainder of it, with him tallying just a point, two assists, a rebound and a steal over eight minutes before his departure. Daniels fared much better in the G League last season, compiling 11.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.0 steals over 31.6 minutes per tilt. While his overall attempts from the field (10.2 per game) weren't particularly poor in terms of efficiency (45.3 percent), he still needs to pick it up and improve on his outside shooting, where Daniels connected on just 30.0 percent of his tries. Daniels figures to log some minutes off the bench but doesn't figure to be a huge factor as a rookie. Managers in dynasty and keeper formats should be the primary people targeting the rookie.
