Dariq Whitehead

Long Island Nets  G League
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Whitehead returned to action during the 2024 Las Vegas Summer League after recovering from a January procedure to address a left shin stress reaction. A top high school prospect in 2022, Whitehead earned MVP honors at the McDonald's All-American Game before heading to Duke. He underwent surgery on his right foot before his freshman season and failed to stand out across 28 appearances before needing another offseason surgery because his foot didn't properly heal from the first one. Despite health concerns, the Nets used the No. 22 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft to select Whitehead, who made only two NBA appearances and four G League appearances as a rookie before being shut down. Whitehead struggled mightily with his shot during Summer League, and he'll presumably have to spend some time in the G League this season to shake off the rust before getting an NBA opportunity. However, if Whitehead can prove the injury concerns are behind him, the 6-foot-6 wing should get looks for the rebuilding Nets. Given that likely won't happen until later in the 2024-25 campaign, Whitehead can safely be left on waivers in standard leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Dariq Whitehead is among the most decorated high school players in recent memory. The 18-year-old won Mr. Basketball USA and was awarded the Naismith Prep Player of the Year award in 2022 while also being the McDonald's All-American Game MVP that season. More strong play at Montverde Academy, the Nike Hoops Summit, and the Jordan Brand Classic led Whitehead to be a top recruit at Duke. Whitehead needed foot surgery before coming to Duke, and he had a second surgery on the same foot within the past few weeks, confirming speculation that he was far from healthy throughout his freshman campaign. Whitehead still averaged 8.3 points per game while burying 42.9 percent of 3.5 three-point attempts per game at Duke. Whitehead's game possesses serious explosiveness and attacking that was not displayed at Duke. He is likely better perceived from his pre-college film than his Duke film. Whitehead has a tall, thick, muscular frame that allows him to absorb contact, and he can work both on and off the ball. Defensively, he has off-ball instincts and a long wingspan to jump in passing lanes and get some blocks. Whitehead is a lottery-level talent. He's projected to be healthy for the start of the upcoming season. He missed time early in his career with foot injuries, but a silver lining is its positive impact on his shooting craft and footwork. He could slip in the draft to a playoff contender, and with the proper development and nurturing of his body, Whitehead's ceiling is among the highest in the draft.

May 25, 2023

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Considered the top prospect in the high school class of 2022 by some evaluators, Whitehead arrived at Duke with high expectations but struggled through an injury-plagued freshman season. Whitehead saw action in 28 games but made only seven starts, posting averages of 8.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.5 made threes (42.9% 3Pt) in 20.6 minutes per game. The injuries ultimately made Whitehead a difficult evaluation, but there's no question the Nets landed a high-level talent for the No. 22 pick in the draft. Whitehead underwent surgery on his foot in May along with a follow-up procedure in June and missed the Las Vegas Summer League, but he's still expected to be ready for the start of the 2023-24 NBA season. It's possible he spends significant time in the G League, but the Nets' wing depth isn't particularly strong. Opportunities should arrive here and there for Whitehead to demonstrate his potential.

FLong Island Nets   G League (Nets)
July 11, 2024
Whitehead will look to gain a more significant role with the Nets in 2024-25 if the opportunity arises due to the team's recent player movements, according to Adam Zagoria of NJ.com. "I look at it as an opportunity for me to get on the court and a bunch of other young guys to grow our games and develop into who we want to be in the NBA," Whitehead said. "And eventually be on their level, if not higher than where they were....and look it as an opportunity for us young guys."
ANALYSIS
Whitehead is recovering from the foot surgery he underwent in early June and is expected to be ready for training camp. If healthy, he could be a solid bet for an expanded role in 2024-25, as the Nets could see if the Duke product can be a productive player at the next level. Considering he's had two foot surgeries over the last 12 months, however, the Nets could also opt to be patient with Whitehead and wait for his moment to come instead of forcing it. He was limited to just two appearances in 2023-24 after being selected with the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
