Bassey tore his left ACL in December of 2023 and is expected to miss the start of 2024-25. In 19 regular-season appearances last season, the 2021 second-round pick served as the primary backup center behind Zach Collins, a smaller role than his first season in San Antonio when the Spurs didn't have Victor Wembanyama roaming the paint. Bassey and Sandro Mamukelashvili signed similar one-year deals this offseason and figure to compete for backup minutes. However, taking the injury out of the equation, Bassey's role is murkier than last season. Wembanyama's move to center will have Collins playing off the bench, leaving Bassey and Mamukelashvili to compete for third-string minutes. Bassey's injury concerns, competition and limited fantasy upside - he's essentially a traditional big man with no outside shot - make him undraftable in standard leagues. However, his situation could change as the season progresses, so he's worth keeping an eye on when he's finally cleared to play. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Charles A. Bassey was born in Lagos, Nigeria in October of 2000. In Nigeria, soccer was Bassey's first love. A Nigerian youth basketball coach convinced him to switch from soccer to basketball. At age 14, the lengthy Bassey was named most valuable player of the basketball camp Giants of Africa. Shortly afterward, Bassey moved to the United States. Bassey was 6-foot-10 at the time. He then attended St. Anthony Catholic High School, a private school in San Antonio, Texas. He quickly earned MaxPreps Freshman All-American honors in 2015-16. After two years at St. Anthony, Bassey transferred to DeSales High School in Louisville. In June of 2018, Bassey committed to playing college basketball for Western Kentucky, where he played for three seasons. During his junior season (2020-21), Bassey posted 17.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game. That summer he declared himself eligible for the 2021 NBA Draft and was selected with the 53rd overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Bassey supplied no counting stats in one minute during Saturday's 113-103 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS Bassey played one minute of garbage time, just the third time he has seen the court all season. Following a torn ACL in December, Bassey has worked his way back into the rotation, albeit on a sporadic basis. He possesses an intriguing skill set, something we may see a bit more of further down the track should the Spurs start looking to the future. At this point, he is unlikely to be anything more than a depth piece.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2021
Bassey had his 2023-23 season shortened when he had a displaced kneecap in the final month of the season, but he showed some promise as a backup center before that. The big man missed most of the first half with different ailments but went on to average 8.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 1.0 blocks on 62 percent shooting across the final 10 games of his season. He did that damage across 17 minutes a night, and fantasy managers were praying we could see Bassey play a full allotment of minutes over the final month with that sort of stat line. Those are some elite per-minute averages, but playing just 35 games is not an encouraging sign, either. His fantasy value took another major dip in the offseason, with San Antonio adding Victor Wembanyama. The top pick is expected to be the centerpiece of this franchise. It was already difficult for Bassey to reach 25 minutes with Zach Collins out there, so he might fall out of the rotation altogether. We do need to keep an eye on San Antonio to see if they tank the final months of the season because sitting Wembanyama and Collins could make Bassey a fantasy beast over the closing weeks of the year. Until then, Bassey needs to remain on waiver wires.
Bassey was selected by the 76ers with the 53rd overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Bassey was a three-year performer for Western Kentucky. The 6-foot-11 center averaged a double-double last season with 17.6 points and 11.6 rebounds across 28 starts. Bassey will have the privilege to learn the game from one of the most dominant big men in the league in Joel Embiid, and he'll be fighting for reserve minutes with Andre Drummond.

Set for NBA chance?
CSan Antonio Spurs

Bassey might be in line to see extended minutes at the NBA level with Zach Collins sidelined due to a lower leg injury, Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News speculates.
ANALYSIS Bassey is one of the players that might benefit from Collins' absence, and head coach Gregg Popovich has been impressed with his contributions so far. "He kind of looks the part, doesn't look like a deer in the headlights or anything like that," he said. "He is out there playing. He is aggressive, a good defender, moved the ball well." Bassey is averaging 26.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in his first two G League appearances this season.
