2025 Fantasy Outlook
Kikuchi had a mixed debut with the Angels in 2025. He made all his scheduled starts for a third consecutive season and worked over 165 innings for a third consecutive season as well. He did continue to lean into his newfound love of his slider that Houston encouraged after acquiring him in 2024, but Kikuchi also embraced the Los Angeles Angels' culture of mediocrity and did little else to help fantasy managers. He won just 21% of his starts because a 1.42 WHIP led to too much traffic that the bullpen often could not keep on the bases when he came out of games. The 174 strikeouts were helpful, but the 3.99 ERA not so much. It is apparent the Angels are not going to be any better any time soon, so fantasy managers would be wise to consider Kikuchi for his strikeouts in the end game of drafts if they are looking to bolster that category because recent history ovvers little confidence the wins or the ratios will be of much help. 2016
Kikuchi enjoyed a career year in 2023 and finished with a 3.86 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 181:48 K:BB over 167.2 innings. He nearly cut his walk rate in half to 6.9 percent and had a solid 25.9 percent strikeout rate. A 3.77 xFIP also indicates his results were mostly earned, though a 42.4 percent hard-hit rate and 1.45 HR/9 were both bottom-10 among qualified starters despite being significant improvements from his 2022 marks. The left-hander, who will turn 33 years old in June, continues to average about 95 mph with his fastball and still generates plenty of whiffs, but those swing-and-misses have never really translated to equitable run prevention. Kikuchi's 2023 numbers certainly weren't a fluke, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be able to replicate them. A regression in 2024 shouldn't be the expectation but certainly wouldn't be surprising given the 5.02 ERA across his first four MLB seasons after coming over from Japan.

Garners All-Star nod
Kikuchi has been selected to participate in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
Analysis
Kikuchi is having an excellent season in his first year with the Angels, as the veteran hurler owns a 3.02 ERA across 107.1 innings over 19 starts in 2025. If he's able to maintain that figure, he'd end up posting a career-best mark in that category. The 1.38 WHIP isn't encouraging, though, as it's his second-highest figure in that category over the last six seasons.
