Boston Red Sox
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Abreu's .825 OPS facing righties compared to a .532 mark versus lefties resulted in Abreu collecting 85 percent of his plate appearances against right-handers. Even with the smattering of action without the platoon edge, Abreu posted a 94th percentile hard hit rate and 86th percentile barrel rate. A 28.2 percent strikeout rate facing righties dampened Abreu's production. He fanned at a slightly lower clip against southpaws, but his quality of contact was weak. Abreu's league-leading 18 defensive runs saved in right field along with nine assists earned him a Gold Glove. His defensive prowess may help earn more playing time, but it's best to plan on reduced playing time. Abreu outpointed his xBA and xSLG, but playing in Fenway Park often skews the expected algorithms. There may be some regression, but Abreu's quality of contact is solid. He just needs to put the ball in play more. Read Past Outlooks

Abreu went 3-for-3 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored in Thursday's 5-3 win over Texas.
ANALYSIS
Abreu knotted the game at 2-2 with a fifth-inning solo shot off Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi and later put the Red Sox in front with a three-run blast in the ninth. Although he'll likely regularly operate in the lower part of Boston's batting order when starting, the left-handed-hitting Abreu should see plenty of playing time in 2025 while sitting on the strong side of a platoon in right field with Rob Refsnyder.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The lefty-hitting Abreu was traded to Boston at the 2022 trade deadline in the deal that sent Christian Vazquez to Houston. He doesn't run as much as he used to, attempting just 13 steals in 114 games across Triple-A and the majors, but Abreu has a cannon of an arm and logged an impressive 49.1 HardHit% rate in 53 batted-ball events, per Statcast. He made solid swing decisions in his brief cup of coffee, but Abreu's Contact% was a hair below 70 percent, so he will likely be better in OBP leagues than AVG leagues. Abreu's defensive versatility and patient approach make him more valuable to Boston than to fantasy managers, but he's a very strong outfield streamer when home games and/or games against right-handed pitchers are on the docket. Abreu figured to get a chance on the strong side of an outfield platoon with Rob Refsnyder to start the year, but the acquisition of Tyler O'Neill notably diminishes his 2024 outlook.
Abreu was added to Boston's 40-man roster in November and should open the 2023 campaign at the Triple-A level. He was acquired from Houston in the Christian Vazquez trade and had an .834 OPS with 19 home runs and 31 stolen bases at the Double-A level in 2022. More impressively he had a walk rate around 20 percent, though he also had a 26.3 percent strikeout rate. That level of plate discipline isn't sustainable, but it's still a strength as he also had a double-digit walk rate in the lower minors. Abreu could make his big-league debut in 2023 if he continues his strong play at Triple-A Worcester.

Expendable for Boston?
OFBoston Red Sox
November 17, 2024
The Red Sox may be willing to part with Abreu this winter as they look to upgrade their starting rotation through the trade market, reports Christopher Smith of MassLive.com.
ANALYSIS
Abreu won a Gold Glove as a rookie in 2024 and also performed well offensively with 15 homers and a .781 OPS in 132 games. The 25-year-old wouldn't seem to be a logical trade candidate on the surface given his strong debut campaign, but Boston could be willing to move him with top prospect Roman Anthony on the cusp of the majors.
