Will Brennan

27-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Cleveland Guardians
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Brennan settled in as a decent platoon option in an increasingly crowded Cleveland outfield in 2024. The lefty bat slashed .264/.309/.388 with eight home runs and 30 RBI in 114 games. Those were very similar numbers to Brennan's 2023 campaign, when he appeared in 138 games for the Guardians. The 26-year-old has sported fairly conventional splits during his time with the team, posting a .727 OPS against righties the past three seasons but only a .453 OPS against southpaws. Brennan should occupy a similar role in 2025, though the team got deeper in the outfield last year with the trade deadline acquisition of Lane Thomas and the emergence of youngster Jhonkensy Noel down the stretch. Brennan is a steady if not spectacular hitter, and he can have some fantasy value when he's in the lineup, but he shouldn't be counted on for a breakout performance this coming season. No lock in right field

Brennan and Jhonkensy Noel enter spring training in a competition for the starting job in right field, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Brennan made most of his starts in right field in 2024, but the left-handed hitter platooned at the position in the second half after the righty-swinging Noel was called up late June. Brennan burst onto the scene in 2022 but failed to replicate his success the last two seasons, hitting just 13 home runs with a .673 OPS over 252 regular-season games. The Guardians would like to get more power out of the corner outfield positions, particularly after the team traded Josh Naylor during the offseason. Enter Noel, who went deep 13 times in 67 regular-season games after his call-up. He presents issues, too, so the eventual starter may emerge from outside this duo.

Stat Review
How does Will Brennan compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
In another era, Brennan might have been viewed differently given that he has put up high batting averages consistently throughout his time in professional baseball. However, modern fans and front offices can see that it's a rather empty batting average. Brennan managed five home runs and 13 steals in 455 big-league plate appearances last season at the age of 25. Worst of all is the fact that Brennan has been averse to drawing walks, managing just a 3.6 BB% and .308 OBP through 500 plate appearances in the majors to date. He's a quality defender in right field and projects to start there for the Guardians on Opening Day, but there will be pressure on him to provide more offensively in his second full season.
Brennan was a popular favorite among prospect analysts all season, but the secret is out after he impressed in a brief cup of coffee with the big club. The Guardians have built their offense around high-contact hitters, and Brennan fits that mold perfectly. He had an 11.5 K% across Double-A, Triple-A and the majors, and his 8.9 K% in 45 MLB plate appearances was his lowest mark at any level since rookie ball. Brennan's BB% dipped from 10.8% at Double-A to 7.6% at Triple-A and 4.4% in the majors, so at this stage it's more about contact than patience. He hit above .310 at all three stops last year. As a lefty hitter with a good glove and a dash of power and speed in the minors, Brennan is similar in many ways to teammate Steven Kwan. Like with Kwan, Brennan's hard-hit data isn't very impressive and he hit just 14 homers on the year, so the hit tool has to be as good as advertised for the whole package to work. While he isn't as good of a defender as Myles Straw, he has a much higher overall ceiling due to Straw's woeful offense. The Guardians have several big-league-ready outfielders waiting for an opportunity, but Brennan is probably the best of the bunch, and could take over for Straw whenever the club is ready to shift him to a fourth outfielder role.
