Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Holton didn't make Detroit's Opening Day roster, but he was recalled early in the season despite opening with a few rough outings for Triple-A Toledo (4 HR allowed over 7.2 innings). The southpaw ended up being one of the league's most pleasant surprises, leading qualified relievers with 85.1 innings while ranking 2nd with a 0.87 WHIP. The bulk reliever mixed six pitches effectively, including a new slider (.135 BA) that he threw almost exclusively to left-handed batters. Holton's 91.5 mph 4-seamer didn't blow away hitters and his 22.8% strikeout rate was below average, but he didn't issue many free passes either. In fact, his 5.3% walk rate was T-10th among qualified relievers. However, some ratio regression should be expected in 2024, as Holton's 2.11 ERA didn't sync up with his 3.55 FIP or 3.60 SIERA. Expect the Tigers to deploy the left-hander in a similar capacity this season. Read Past Outlooks
Will be opener in Game 1
Holton will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher Saturday in Game 1 of the ALDS in Cleveland, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Holton pitched in both games of the wild-card series versus the Astros, including as an opener in Game 2. That means he will technically be "starting" back-to-back postseason games for the Tigers, but the bullpen will be heavily involved, of course.
