2026 Fantasy Outlook
Casas endured a second straight season impacted by injury, as a serious knee injury ended the campaign in May. He wasn't productive when healthy, posting a slash line of .182/.277/.303 with three home runs across 29 games. The last two seasons have sullied the sheen of the once-promising prospect, who is two years removed from a rookie season that saw him swat 24 homers with an .857 OPS over 132 games. That version of Casas would be an everyday presence, but early in the offseason, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow refused to commit to him as team's starter at first base. Rumors of Boston's interest in free agent Pete Alonso only served to emphasize Casas' uncertainty. Alonso eventually signed with Baltimore, leaving Boston to rebuild Casas or seek alternates. Manager Alex Cora supports the 25-year-old first baseman but acknowledged that Casas needs to be healthy. After returning to the playoffs and calling up their best prospects in 2025, the Red Sox are unlikely to roll with uncertainty at 1B. Read Past Outlooks
Could begin season in minors
Casas (knee) could begin the season at Triple-A Worcester following Boston's acquisition of Willson Contreras (shoulder), Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Casas is working his way back from surgery to repair a ruptured left patellar tendon and could be ready to go Opening Day. However, with Contreras added to the mix, the Red Sox could choose to proceed cautiously with Casas, who has minor-league options remaining. A trade of an outfielder (likely Jarren Duran) could allow both Contreras and Casas to play regularly between first base and designated hitter, though Masataka Yoshida also looms as a DH option. A clearer plan for Casas should be revealed during spring training.

After a slow first week, Casas found his stroke, batting .268/.359/.625 in the 16 games before being felled by torn cartilage in his left rib cage. He returned after missing nearly four months, posting a .239/.333/.433 line. A 33.3 percent strikeout rate in that span indicates Casas' timing was off from the extended absence, while his 11.8 percent walk rate to end the season suggests he was less patient than usual. Casas' quality of contact was in sync with the previous season. Casas was supposed to record fewer strikeouts last season, but the injury derailed those plans. Instead of having evidence that Casas took the next step, we're still betting on the comeback. There's no denying potential power. It's still unclear whether Casas will be a four-category monster or a batting average risk. He also needs to show he can play 150 games. Caveat emptor: The market isn't likely to discount Casas.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Given vote of confidence
Boston's chief baseball officer Craig Breslow stated Monday that the team still has confidence in Casas at first base, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Breslow made it a point to mention after the Red Sox traded for Willson Contreras that Casas is still on the team's radar, and the club believes he can contribute once he fully recovers from a significant knee injury that cut his 2025 campaign short. "It's no secret that Triston has tremendous potential, but also hasn't been able to stay on the field the last couple of years, thanks to two really unfortunate but significant injuries," said Breslow. "I had a chance to talk to Triston this morning, and what I told him is exactly what I'll share with all of you, which is we still have a ton of confidence and belief in Triston. What he needs to do is commit to doing everything possible to get back on the field. He's doing that right now." It's been reported over the offseason that Casas could begin the 2026 season in the minors as he works his way back from injury.
