2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gonsolin spent the bulk of 2024 recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in August of 2023. The right-hander did get in three minor-league rehab outings in September and performed well, allowing two runs on seven hits while posting a 12:2 K:BB over 7.2 innings. The brief stint instills confidence that Gonsolin will be ready to pitch for the start of spring training in 2025, but it's unclear what his role might be with the Dodgers after signing a one-year contract with the club in November. The most likely scenario has him competing with Landon Knack, Bobby Miller, Dustin May and possibly others for one of the final two spots in what projects to be a deep six-man rotation. ANALYSIS
Gonsolin didn't pitch for the Dodgers in 2024 while spending most of the season recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in September 2023, but he was cleared to make three rehab starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City this past September. Though he looked sharp at Triple-A, Gonsolin was never reinstated from the injured list during the Dodgers' run to the World Series, but that wasn't the result of him suffering any sort of setback. Despite having had a normal offseason in addition to owning a sterling 3.19 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 375.2 career innings in the big leagues, Gonsolin will have to fight for a spot in a talent-laden Dodgers rotation that added Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki this offseason and also has Shohei Ohtani and Dustin May returning from Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers plan to open the season with a traditional five-man rotation before going to a six-man setup once Ohtani is fully stretched out for starting duty -- perhaps at some point in May -- so Gonsolin will be competing with Sasaki, May, Bobby Miller (concussion), Landon Knack and Justin Wrobleski for one of two spots. Gonsolin has a minor-league option remaining, but since he's 30 years old and has a strong track record in the majors, he would likely work out of the big-league bullpen if he misses out on a rotation spot.

After a magical 2022 season that put him in Cy Young contention for much of the campaign, Gonsolin struggled to get on track last year. An ankle sprain resulted in the right-hander beginning the season on the IL, though he pitched well upon his return, compiling a 1.93 ERA (albeit with a 4.24 FIP) through his first nine starts. Things fell apart for Gonsolin after mid-June, however, and it was eventually revealed that he pitched through an elbow issue for over a month. Not long thereafter, Gonsolin hit the injured list again with right forearm inflammation, and he subsequently underwent Tommy John surgery. The procedure will likely keep the hurler out of action for most (if not all) of 2024, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him as a Dodger, as the team not only has multiple young arms looking to settle into the rotation but also traded for (and extended) Tyler Glasnow in the offseason and will have Shohei Ohtani leading the staff in in 2025.
Gonsolin was in contention for the NL Cy Young Award with a 16-1 record, 2.10 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 116:35 K:BB across 128.1 innings before he suffered a forearm strain in late August, and he only returned from the injured list during the final week of the regular season. The right-hander worked as a swingman for the Dodgers over the previous three years, but he was a pivotal rotation piece in 2022, especially given the pitching staff's other injury woes. The right-hander had a 23.9 percent strikeout rate and 7.0 percent walk rate, and opposing batters hit only .172 with a 0.76 HR/9. Gonsolin had a 3.70 xFIP and may have a tough time replicating the dominant campaign, though he'll continue to benefit from making half his starts and Dodgers Stadium and having a strong defense behind him.
Gonsolin only pitched half of the season between two IL stints with an inflamed shoulder. He wasn't 100% healthy even when pitching as evidenced by his 14.2 BB% and his fastball losing 1.3 mph. The Dodgers didn't let him go deep into games. In 13 starts, he was only allowed to throw five or more innings four times. Additionally, he only faced six batters a third time through. He should be able to navigate a lineup a third time with an acceptable fastball and two great breaking pitches -- a slider (20.7 SwStr%) and splitter (19.1 SwStr%). The spin rates on his pitches took a major hit after the foreign substance ban enforcement, with his splitter losing over 500 rpm from 2020 to July of last year. Some or most of the decline could have been injury related. It's impossible to say.
Gonsolin missed the early portion of summer camp, so he opened the season continuing to throw at the alternate site. He was shuttled back and forth to the active roster most of August, making three scoreless starts. The righty was recalled for good in late August, making six more appearances (five starts). His 22.2 K-BB% was impressive, though a 3.80 xFIP and 3.68 SIERA indicate Gonsolin's 2.31 ERA was artificially low. A .250 BABIP and 4.0% HR/FB certainly helped. Gonsolin deploys a four-pitch mix, using a fastball averaging 95 mph about half the time and a show-me curveball. A slider against righties and a splitter against lefties fueled his 26.1 K%. Gonsolin's skills are commensurate with a top-50 starter. It's not a lock he will get the volume in the Dodgers' stacked rotation, but this is a fantasy-worthy arm. Try to find a spot for him on your staff.
Gonsolin debuted in late June and wound up spending most of the second half in the majors. In six starts and five relief appearances, he posted a 2.93 ERA, though his underlying numbers weren't particularly impressive, as he finished with a 22.7% strikeout rate and a 9.2% walk rate. With a fastball that's touched triple digits in the past (though it averaged only 93.5 mph last season) and a strikeout rate of 28.7% over his last three seasons in the minors, there's certainly room for growth for Gonsolin. Whether that growth occurs in the rotation or the bullpen remains to be seen. He threw four pitches at least 10% of the time in 2019, but only his split-finger was graded by scouts as a strong secondary weapon. The Dodgers develop pitchers well, but they also have a large number of good ones already, so Gonsolin's fantasy value this season will depend in large part on his role.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Trying to get stretched out
PLos Angeles Dodgers
September 25, 2022
The Dodgers think Gonsolin -- currently out with a forearm injury -- won't be able to pitch more than four innings in an outing before the postseason, reports Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Gonsolin is set to return to the majors following his lone rehab start and is likely to toss just a couple of innings in his first appearance. How much he'll be able to pitch in a postseason contest will be dependent upon how well his two appearances go before the regular season's end. The Dodgers are reportedly considering combining Andrew Heaney, Dustin May -- out with a back issue -- and Gonsolin as a fourth option for the postseason behind Julio Urias, Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Anderson.
