Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
2017
Rivera had some sneaky NL-only utility during his time in the majors in 2017, but he didn't play in a single major-league game in 2018 as an elbow injury kept him sidelined. Let this be a lesson for all those who assume every Tommy John recovery follows the same path. Rivera was expecting to return from the September 2017 procedure before May, but his rehab assignment was delayed until July and he suffered a setback a little over a week into his minor-league stint. Rivera did not end up returning to a competitive setting. Before the lost season, Rivera had shown stellar bat-to-ball ability (13.9 K%) and a splash of pop (.140 ISO). He doesn't walk much, but he was a slightly-better-than-average hitter over a 231-PA sample in his lone extended look to date. As of mid-January, Rivera still has his 40-man spot with the Mets, but he will be hard pressed to make the Opening Day roster.
Rivera wound up playing in 73 games in Queens thanks to numerous injuries to the Mets' regulars. The infielder made the most of his opportunities as well, compiling a .290/.330/.430 slash line in 214 at-bats. He still doesn't walk very much, but his high-contact approach kept his strikeout rate at a solid 13.9 percent mark. Rivera played all around the field, making 28 appearances at third base, 20 at first base, 12 at the keystone and even three in left field before a torn UCL ended his campaign. He was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery in September and is not expected to be back until the middle of the season. Given the graduations of Gavin Cecchini and Dominic Smith from the minors, playing time could be hard to come by for the 29-year-old Rivera once he returns.
Even though he had put up strong offensive numbers at every stop along the way, the 28-year-old didn't get his first look at even Triple-A until 2015, and he finally worked his way up to the majors in 2016. The utility infielder earned his promotion after tearing the cover off the ball at Las Vegas, slashing .353/.393/.516 in 105 games before joining the parent club. Buoyed in part by an unsustainable .376 BABIP, Rivera hit .333 but also continued a trend from his minor league days of not drawing many walks. One of the reasons he didn't move through the ranks quicker is that -- aside from a slight power uptick in the minors last year -- he's been a pure contact hitter with only pedestrian speed on the bases. Still, he's proven himself capable of hitting for average and can play virtually anywhere in the field, so Rivera may get another look in a utility role in the majors this season.
