2025 Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Anderson began the season as the Marlins regular shortstop. After a decent start, Anderson performed even worse than the previous season, which was the nadir of his career. He was released in early July then failed to latch on with another organization. Anderson's Hard-Hit rate and exit velocity have been declining while his strikeout rate is rising. A 15.2 percent fly ball rate squashed any semblance or power. The Angels signed Anderson to a minor league deal, ostensibly as a reserve middle infielder. Anderson his .301 just three years ago, but there is nothing in his performance since 2022 indicating a rebound is forthcoming. Read Past Outlooks

Contract selected
The Angels selected Anderson's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Although he only slashed .263/.311/.333 with three RBI and four runs scored across 61 Cactus League plate appearances, Anderson will end up with a spot on the Angels' Opening Day roster. He narrowly outperformed Kevin Newman (.216/.326/.243) this spring, though it's still unclear which player will get the starting nod at shortstop while Zach Neto recovers from a shoulder injury. Angel Perdomo was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

It's difficult to overstate just how hard Anderson crashed and burned in 2023. The 30-year-old came into the year having slashed .318/.347/.474 over his previous four seasons. He won one batting title during that stretch and, among regulars, no one sported a higher batting average than Anderson. Last season, the shortstop fell off to an anemic .245/.286/.296 line, with his .582 OPS ranking 133rd out of 133 qualifiers. The Statcast data matched the production, with Anderson's xwOBA ranking in the bottom eighth percentile. Anderson's sprint speed also cratered to the 45th percentile, which could indicate his early-season knee issue continued to nag at him after his stint on the injured list. After the White Sox decided against picking up his $14 million option for 2024, Anderson eventually landed with the Marlins on a one-year, $5 million deal. He is expected to serve as Miami's everyday shortstop.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely to miss roster?
The Angels signed Nicky Lopez to a major-league contract Tuesday, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, which could preclude Anderson from being added to the big-league roster.
ANALYSIS
There was an opening on Anaheim's 40-man roster after Mickey Moniak was released Tuesday, which seemingly created space for Anderson to be elevated from his minor-league contract. However, the Angels elected to instead sign Lopez, who had a 1.092 OPS in nine spring games for the Cubs before being released last week. Anderson's .645 OPS in Cactus League play and .214 average with Miami last season don't inspire confidence that the Angels will carve out additional roster space.
