2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gray reached the 200-strikeout plateau in 2024 in his first year with the Cardinals, marking the second time in his career he's gotten to that level. At 30.3 percent, he was one of just three qualifiers to fan 30 percent of the batters he faced, joining Chris Sale and Tarik Skubal. Gray's sweeper was once again his go-to pitch for swings and misses with a 44.4 percent whiff rate, although he topped a 20 percent whiff rate with four other pitches, as well. Problems with the home run ball away from cavernous Busch Stadium helped lead to a pedestrian 3.84 ERA, but ERA indicators suggest Gray should have been at least a half-run or so better than that. Gray hasn't reached 200 innings since he did it back-to-back years in 2014 and 2015 with the Athletics, but with an average of 28.2 starts and 156.1 innings over the last five non-COVID seasons, he compares favorably to most of his contemporaries. Comes away with 13th win
Gray (13-8) earned the win against the Giants on Sunday, allowing three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out six across 5.1 innings.
Analysis
Gray retired the first 11 batters he faced and kept the Giants off the board through the first five frames. He was brought out for the sixth inning to earn the quality start, but Gray allowed five of the first six batters on base before being pulled for Matt Svanson. Gray has struggled to finish in his last two starts, and the veteran right-hander has a 4.45 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 179:35 K:BB across 163.2 innings this season. He's slated to make his next start next weekend on the road against the Brewers.

Gray was the runner up for the AL Cy Young award after posting a 2.69 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. He was largely the same pitcher as in 2022 (3.64 FIP compared to 3.66 FIP in 2022) with a similar strikeout rate (24.3% K%) and walk rate (7.3% BB%), but he was able to stay healthy and pitch more innings (32 starts compared to 24 in 2022) and more innings per outing (5.75 IP per game, compared to 4.96 IP per game in 2022). He may have been a bit luckier with a low 5.2% HR/FB, but he also had a low 9.4% HR/FB in 2022 as his home runs allowed numbers declined sharply in his move to Target Field from Great American Ball Park. His .295 BABIP was also his highest in five seasons, which shows his outstanding season wasn't all luck. At age 34, Gray has above-average control, limits hard contact (77th percentile in Barrel rate) and induces ground balls (47.3%) despite below average velocity (92.9 mph average fastball). He'll work at the top of the St. Louis rotation after signing a three-year, $70 free agent deal.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Giants keeping close tabs?
The Giants could make a move to sign Gray in the offseason, according to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle.
Analysis
In Slusser's words, Gray is "on the Giants' radar" and "very much a potential target" for the club this offseason. The Giants only have two pitchers locked into the 2026 rotation, Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, and adding an experienced starter like Gray would benefit the organization. Even though Gray hasn't replicated his 2023 form, when he finished second behind Gerrit Cole in the AL Cy Young race, he owns a solid 4.13 ERA in 56 starts with the Cardinals over the last two seasons.
